Back pain may be due to an inflamed piriformis muscle that helps to rotate the hip and leg outwardly and also stabilizes the region of the pelvis and when inflamed, it may become hard and causes nerve-related sciatica due to it pressing against the sciatic nerve. There is however no need to have surgery to treat an inflamed piriformis and one can find relief through ice or heat or through taking non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Five Percent Of Americans May Have Felt Back And Leg Pain Once In Their Lives

It is believed that as many as five percent of the American population have experienced back pain and it is believed that in their lifetime, they have a high percentage chance of experiencing back and leg pain. Sometimes, this back and leg pain may be severe though mostly it is of a milder nature. Common causes of back and leg pain include herniated disk in the lumbar spine, spinal stenosis for back pain and deep vein thrombosis and restless legs, for leg pain.

To find relief from back and leg pain, the patient may need to have epidural injections of glucocorticoids, though the efficacy of such therapy is as yet unproven but are nevertheless a reasonable alternative where back and leg pain limits the functioning in the patient. Back and leg pain should be taken seriously and back pain is often associated with many illnesses and may even cause serious disability as well as mounting medical bills. Back pain is the second most common affliction known to mankind, after common cold.

When there is pinching in the spinal nerve in the low back, it can be related to severe leg pain and pain that radiates down the leg is known as sciatica and, if there is loss of function of the nerve, the patient is also at risk of losing his or her reflexes, sensation as well as muscle strength. Back and leg pain may often be very intense and leg pain may increase as the patient walks or even stands and may be relieved through sitting.

Leg pain may be of different types and include groin pull, hamstring pull or tear and quadriceps pull or tear. Groin pulls results in pain in the upper inner thigh muscle and could be symptomatic of overuse. To overcome it, one would need to be patient and it may require gentle stretching as well as muscle strengthening. The hamstring pull or tear occurs when the patient experiences pain in the rear portion of the thigh and may cause the patient to have difficulty while he or she tries to extend the leg and will feel a certain amount of pain, while doing so. One can get relief through use of ice. Back and leg pain are often very painful and requires keeping a good posture as well as taking adequate care when performing activities that may aggravate the back or leg.
