When it comes to dealing with your depression you will want to go through three steps. First, you will need to take charge of your health. You need to recognize that you have a problem and that you need help from someone else. You will need to make sure that you understand the disorder and how it affects you and also what causes your depression. The second step is reaching out. You will want to explore all the ways to help deal with depression and how you can get back on track with your life. The third step is living for each day.

Depression is not something that will go away. You will be affected by the disorder for the rest of your life if you don’t do something about it. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain and it has many other factors or side effects. It is a serious medical condition and it needs to be treated as soon as symptoms surface.

The first step to treating your depression is the hardest. You will be forced to look at yourself and you will need to analyze your life. You will need to make a list of all your triggers. The first step is the hardest because you have to take a step back and look at yourself. You are forced to take every detail of your life and place it in a list of triggers or non triggers. Once you have identified your triggers you can then start to avoid situations that will bring you down or make you fall into a deep depression.

The second step to treating your depression is knowledge. You have to learn about the different medications and treatments so that you will have a idea of what you want to avoid and what could possibly help you with your depression. You may just need therapy or have someone to talk to, you could need the medication to control your imbalance, or you could possible need both. Consult your doctor and ask them what they think you should do about your depression.

Finally, you can only be expected to live one day at a time. Recovering will take time and you might feel like nothing’s working for you, but eventually you will be able to wake up and take a deep breath and live your life like you once were able to.

Suicide is one of the most severe side effects of depression. Depression is a chemical imbalance that allows a person to become out of control. They are unable to control their mood swings, diet, and rest. A person’s life is disrupted completely when someone is diagnosed with depression. Those who have severe depression is also mostly diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It doesn’t make you weird it doesn’t make you different. It just acknowledges the fact that everyone handles stress and life events differently.

When it comes to depression a person will begin to feel like they has no energy and eventually like they have no reason to live. They have no reason to want to survive their crisis and have no hope to ever feel better. The hopelessness gives a person a reason not to want to try. People who are severely depressed may be in denial that they are and it is at this point where someone from outside the situation needs to come in an intervene.

The problem with depression is that most people don’t reach out for help. They don’t get a true diagnose or treatment for their depression and they struggle to live within their own mind. Some people who do seek treatment are diagnosed wrongly. They aren’t diagnosed for depression but other mental disorders that are much worse. Being misdiagnosed is one of the reasons why people with depression committee suicide.

There are many medications that claim to help relieve the suicidal effects of depression. Lithium is just one of the medications. Lithium has been given to patients for decades and was once just for bipolar patients. Today, Lithium has been recognized as a way to stop the suicidal thoughts and it has been noted to help others deal more confidently with their disease. Although it cannot cure depression or even relieve depression, it enables the thoughts of death and hopelessness.

To tell if someone near and dear to you is dealing with depression and possible contemplating suicide you will want to look in a change of attitude. Have things that once meant something to them now mean nothing? Do they still want to do hobbies and such that they once loved? Have they pulled away from you? Any “yes”‘ to any of these questions might mean that they are dealing with something that they can’t handle by themselves. They may be dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts.

You’ve just given birth to a delightful and beautiful baby and everyone is overjoyed – everyone except you. It is normal for women to feel a little overwhelmed and even a bit sad when they have given birth. This emotional vulnerability is quite common as the hormones in a woman’s body are agitated and trying to find their place again. These ‘baby blues’ commonly last for up to two weeks and include irritability, insomnia, anxiety, weepiness and moodiness. However, if these ‘blues’ don’t lift after two weeks, you may be experiencing postpartum depression.

Symptoms of postpartum depression include:

Insomnia: The inability to fall asleep or stay asleep, even when the baby is asleep, is one of the key signs to postpartum depression.

Sadness and weepiness that persists throughout the day.

Feeling disinterested in activities that you normally enjoy and even those you don’t are another factor to consider in PPD.

Finding it difficult to concentrate.

Drastic changes in appetite.

Irritability and moodiness or mood swings.

Feelings of guilt to excess.

Anxiety or panic attacks.

Suicidal thoughts.

The medical industry is constantly missing diagnosis of postpartum depression in mothers. Between 10 and 20 per cent of mothers will develop postpartum depression and many times it is ‘sloughed off’ as adjusting to being a new mother and feeling a little anxious about having a new baby. In most cases, where these ‘blues’ have lasted longer than a couple of weeks, the mother is actually experiencing true postpartum depression.

PPD can be mild to severe, from simply feeling weepy and moody to having thoughts of suicide and/or harming the baby.

If you think you may be suffering from PPD, seek help immediately. Be honest with yourself, your significant other and your healthcare professional that you fear you may be suffering from postpartum depression and clearly state the symptoms you have been having.

Scientist have found that people with diabetes are at a far more risk for developing depression. People who have been diagnosed with the disorder has depression because of poor glucose control. The diabetes affects a person’s daily life and it decreases the quality of life.

Things that someone could have done before, they can’t do anymore. They can’t eat the foods that they may want; they can’t control their diet or daily habits. Many people with diabetes have to check their sugar everyday by a drop of blood. Things like lack of control and changing a person’s life is a reason why depression happens to some people. They begin to feel trapped in their own body. People who have diabetes and depression have a higher risk of death that of that with those who have just depression.

When it comes to disorders or diseases that effect the rest of a person’s life like diabetes, the person will go through a grief period. This doesn’t turn into depression until the person becomes overwhelmed with anger or denial. Some people can have the strength to look towards the positive and work through it, however, some people can never fully recover some thing that changes their life. Some people with diabetes feels like they have lost something valuable or precious.

Diabetes is a disorder that can scary people. The though of amputations, blindness, kidney failure, and even death related to the disorder can make people take a spiral spin to their own demise. If you notice that someone near and dear to you has been diagnosed with diabetes month ago and still seem mourning, you should bring their depression to the attention of their doctor. This way you can help your find safely get over the shock of something like diabetes.

You may want to suggest to your family member or friend that they should go to someone and talk about their experiences with diabetes and what worries them about the disease and if they have any issues. Diabetes doesn’t have to be life-threaten and by talking about their insecurities they will feel better about ‘the diagnose’ and their depression could disappear once they realize they can live with it.

Depression is caused by hormonal changes, trauma, stress, and other social factors. When it comes to the hormonal changes, this affects teens and those who are going through the change of life once again. It is very common to see many teens depressed before and during puberty; however, it’s also very common for women to get depressed when they go through menopause or the change.

When it comes to depression because of menopause, many women feel that they have no purpose. Most women will associate youth and usefulness to their reproductive capabilities. However, being able to reproduce doesn’t make you a woman. You’re a woman regardless of that fact. To woman, losing their youth can be devastating and severe depression will set in. However, not just women experience depression later in life. Many men find themselves in the same boat.

Men who find themselves hidden in their own darkness or depression is because they too don’t feel useful. This is the time when retirement sets in and all of a sudden, they have nothing to do. They begin to feel helpless and in the way. They don’t have to worry about their daily grind anymore and many of them will deteriorate after retirement. In addition, this is the time when we experience trauma mostly.

This is the time where our bodies begin to fail and illnesses arrive. In addition, in our golden years, this is where we have to say goodbye to our closest friends and family members. It can be overwhelming to a person.

The elderly who go untreated for their depression are actually more likely to get worse. The body will shut down even more when the mind is depressed. When living with a medical illness many of the elderly will seem like they give up. Truth is, they don’t give up, their depression just gets the better of them. Untreated depression is the most common disorder as for the leading cause of suicide in the elderly. That’s why if you notice a loved one who seems to be under the weather, try and spend more time with them or take more of an interest in them. The added attention will support them through the difficult times. You may want to consult their doctor as well.

If you are not feeling whole, if you are not feeling happy as you once were in your life, it could be that you are under the effects of depression.

Depression is all about your mind, your feelings, and your being. If you are not feeling whole, if you are not feeling happy as you once were in your life, it could be that you are under the effects of depression. Many don’t even realize they are suffering with depression until their lives has changed so drastically that they don’t know or realize just how to fix it all. If you are not feeling great, if you are not enjoying your life as you were just a few days again, you could be undergoing the transformation of depression.

Think positive thoughts and put your best foot forward. We have most all heard that old expression and what it means is all about your state of mind. Think positive and the things in your life will appear or seem to be more positive. The changes in your life are only going to happen because you make them happen. No one else can do this for you. If you feel down, and unhappy only you can seek the treatment need to fix it, and to put your life back together to where you want it to be.

Depression can be treated in various methods and in various ways. One of the best things you can do is start talking more with your friends and family. You will find your support structure one that is strong, and that will give you answers that you may not even have thought about. Sometimes just talking with another person that knows you well, that knows about your situation and person needs is going to give you the best feelings in the world and will boost your ability to fight off depression alone.

If you feel that depression is weighing heavily on you and your frame of mind, you can seek treatment with your family doctor. Your doctor is one that knows you well, that knows your medical history and can talk to you about medications that may aid you in your quest to find a balanced ground. It is important to remember, that even as you start taking medications or seeking treatments, it can take from twenty to thirty days for medications to become constant in your blood and to balance your mind from bouts of depression. Depression can leave many feeling tired, overwhelmed, overcome by the day to day living, but with a bit of treatment, of medication, or therapy you can find your balance in life, and be happier for it.

While Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) mildly affects 25% of the population, it severely affects another 5% of the population. This is a form of depression, which usually starts in September but reaches its peak in January and February. It is easily disregarded and overlooked. It is also hard to diagnose, and can actually be as difficult to diagnose as fibromyalgia and ADD (attention deficit disorder) both are. This is because while some people may get the winter blues, and some people feel sluggish, people with SAD actually have a debilitating disorder.

While some people who suffer from SAD only have a mild, temporary feeling of helplessness, which is a very minor form of depression, others can have a very serious case of SAD. Many studies have shown that 1 out of every 10 people actually have some form of SAD. As is true with clinical depression, sometimes people who have been diagnosed with SAD actually commit suicide. SAD can even progress into other types of depression. Some of these other forms include manic depression and schizophrenia just to name a few.

Some of the symptoms of SAD include being sluggish, sleeping for more than 10 hours a day and yet still being tired, and migraines which can become quite severe and usually peak when there are drops in barometric pressure.

There have been studies done to show that those people who are depressed are actually more prone to extreme changes in temperature. Some researchers have said that this was because of a lower level of electrolytes, salts, and other essential minerals in the body and brain. One of these minerals is potassium. It has been proven that having a low level of potassium will bring on a severe headache. Two other important elements are Vitamin D and exposure to the sun, or at the very least, to ultraviolet lighting. Many doctors actually believe that because there is limited sun exposure during the winter, which means that a person has a lower level of Vitamin D, they can actually get SAD.

It doesn’t matter what age you are, you can still get SAD. However, it is interesting to note that SAD is rare in childhood and that it usually affects more women than men. In fact, it usually occurs in women who are 35-years-old or older.

If you have evidence that you or a loved one has symptoms of SAD, then it is strongly advisable for you to get medical attention. It may simply be a chemical imbalance, which a simple change in your diet could easily fix. This condition can also be offset by skin treatments, skin peels, and trips to the spa. However, this condition may also be more severe. This is why you should never let this condition go. There is no sense in suffering through it. There have been numerous recent medical advances that enable those who suffer from SAD to be treated effectively, thus greatly improving their quality of life.

For those who are diagnosed with SAD, light therapy is often recommended. Usually a person needs to be in the light for 30 to 60 minutes each day with their eyes open, but not directly focusing on the light. It has been suggested that the best time for this therapy is in the morning. It will take several weeks for the full effect of the treatment to occur. However, some improvement should be seen within one week.

There are also some medications available. These are selective serotonin reputake inhibitors (SSRIs). Some examples include Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil.

The differences between baby blues and postpartum depression are huge. Baby blues are a few days of sadness that come and go within the first couple weeks after the mother gives birth. Crying jags, insomnia, mood swings, and feelings of loneliness, inadequacy, and anxiety characterize the problem. No formal treatment is necessary, as it can be alleviated with simple mood enhancers like sleeping whenever the baby does, asking for help, or joining a new mother’s group.

Postpartum depression, on the other hand, is an entirely different animal. It comes on anytime during the child’s first year and lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. The symptoms are similar to baby blues, but their intensity is increased exponentially. No energy and feelings of shame and insignificance are added to problems of sleeping, constant anxiety, sadness, and lack of energy.

Postpartum depression needs formal treatment. A doctor should absolutely be seen. Counseling and other forms of support of a psychiatric nature like group therapy are a good idea. If not breast feeding, the new mother may be prescribed antidepressants.

However, postpartum depression, as awful as it is, is not the worst that can happen to a new mother’s state of mind after birth. Postpartum psychosis is considerably more disturbing. A rare occurrence, postpartum psychosis usually shows up within the first six weeks after the child is born. When it does happen, it is women who suffer from serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder who will most likely develop postpartum psychosis. Symptoms include obsessing on the baby and violent mood swings from elation to rage and extreme depression.

All of the above disorders can be treated, but first, it needs to be diagnosed. See a doctor immediately if symptoms are exhibited.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a medical condition that can cause a woman to experience extreme depression and anxiety after birthing a baby. This occurs when she should be her happiest. It has received a lot of attention because celebrities, such as Brooke Shields, have spoken out about their own personal experiences. It has also received a lot of attention because of the unspeakable crimes that some mothers have committed against their own children. Part of this problem stems from the fact that a lot of women are afraid to say to how they feel. This is why more education is necessary on this topic so that women realize that PPD is a very real medical condition.

There are a variety of symptoms that accompany PPD. These are as varied as women themselves are. Patients may actually show some, or just a few, of the numerous symptoms. It is important to keep in mind that these symptoms must be present for at least two weeks, for most of the time throughout the day. Most women who experience PPD complain that they have an overall feeling of depression. Other symptoms that accompany PPD are crying, and feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy. Oftentimes there will also be a change in appetite as eating becomes difficult. Sometimes though, a woman may experience an increase in appetite, which she simply cannot explain. These women will not find activities that she previously enjoyed to be pleasurable any longer. They will also oftentimes experience extreme, uncontrollable anxiety and fatigue. These women also feel no desire to take care of their newborns. In fact, they feel disconnected and apathetic whenever they do think about their infant. Sometimes a woman may even go to the extreme and find herself having thoughts about hurting the baby. Whenever a woman feels this way she should tell someone that she trusts, immediately.

PPD is caused by a change in hormones, which occurs after pregnancy. While a woman will usually experience a period of blues after giving birth, sometimes this turns into PPD, especially if the woman’s family or spouse is unsupportive.

It is difficult to treat PPD because most women will not request treatment. This is due to the fact that the majority of these symptoms occur on a small scale after giving birth and thus women sometimes have difficulty seeing when these things actually become problematic. For this reason, spouses and family should keep a close eye on new mothers. Whenever necessary, they should step in and intervene, asking for help.

There are two ways in which PPD can be treated. First of all, when most doctors diagnose a woman with PPD, they will set her up with professional counseling. The counselor will then be able to teach you ways in which you can deal with the anxiety that you are experiencing. The second option is to place the woman on antidepressants. This is oftentimes done in combination with the counseling because the antidepressants can alleviated the outward symptoms while you work with a counselor to ease your anxiety.

The most important thing for a woman who is suffering from PPD to do is remember that she will get better. She simply needs to begin by seeking the appropriate medical attention so that she can finally begin enjoying motherhood.

There are many factors, which can contribute to the cause of depression. These factors may act alone or in combination to cause a depressed person to feel the way that they do. The three main factors that contribute to the cause of depression include:

1. Environmental factors
The most obvious cause in this area is the reaction to an event, oftentimes the reaction to the loss of something or someone significant to that person’s life. While this loss may sometimes be as obvious as the death of a loved one or moving from one state to another (this is especially true for children). At other times it may be less obvious like being dismayed over how you see your career going. A person may also become depressed whenever they feel as though they have become stuck in a monotonous lifestyle with nothing new to look forward to. Even when a person feels as though they have no control over their lives, they may become depressed. Other common causes of depression include: domestic disputes, financial difficulties, and the inability to express your feelings.

2. Psychological factors
There are times when depression is related to, or triggered by, an internal process. For instance, if you have a pessimistic outlook on life, or if you are suffering from a lack of self-esteem, then you may become depressed. Sometimes an illness, or a change in the illness, can lead to depression. Some studies have also shown that depression may be a “natural” part of a cardiovascular disorder.

3. Physiological factors
There is now a diathesis-stress model of depression, which is widely accepted. Included within this model is also clinical depression. Whenever you look at this model, you can clearly see how underlying personality types have some amount of influence upon how a person’s mood is affected by the events in their lives. Nevertheless, doctors are still studying the social, psychological and biological anatomy of depression. This is a difficult study to undertake since the casual relationship with biological biological variables is unknown, thus making it hard to pinpoint the condition’s roots.

However, there are definitely some general physiological factors worth considering. These include: Genetics (Some doctors hypothesize that there is an inherited disposition towards depression.); Neurochemistry (Some doctors think that there is a possibility that high levels of stress hormones, coupled with low dopamine levels, will lead a person to become depressed.); Sleep patterns; Female hormone imbalance (i.e. PMS or menopause); Testosterone imbalance in males; The use of such medications as corticosteroids; A chronic illness such as diabetes or hypothyroidism; Seasonal factors such as a lack of sunlight, which is definitely a contributing factor to SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Any of these aforementioned factors can cause depression. While they may act alone, a lot of times they will combine together to contribute to the cause of depression. If you have any of these factors present in the life of you or a loved one, you can now understand the reason for your depression.

Depression is more than just a state of mind; it can often times be an imbalance of the chemicals in the brain. The brain is a very complex organ, one that your body does not function without. If the chemicals in the brain are not balanced, it can lead to depression for some people. Depression is a mind altered positioning, where you don’t feel like yourself, you don’t love the same things; you don’t want the same things that you always did. Put depression behind you by finding the right type of medication for your condition.

There are literally dozens of medications that one can take to get over depression. If you are suffering with depression, your family doctor is going to be the best starting area, for your treatment of depression. Every type of depression is different, and medications for treatment of depression are various as well. Your doctor will work closely with you and your reactions to the medications, to monitor which medication is going to be most helpful for your personal situation. Medications for depression are monitored by the FDA and have been used for years, treating millions of people over come those feelings of helplessness and depression. The first step in finding a medication that is just right for your needs, is to talk with your doctor.

Another form of treatment is that of psychotherapy. Talking with a person who has been through the learning and education of depression can bring about changes in your life, changes in how you feel, and for some, it can be done without medication. In the battle against depression, talking with a professional is often times going to give you much relief. Those who are mildly depressed find the best overall satisfaction with the use of psychotherapy. A psychotherapist is also known as a therapist. If you need help finding a therapist, you can find results and references online, or you can ask family members who they may have used or talk with in the past.

It is indigenous to Europe but has since been introduced in the United States where it grows wild in a lot of meadows. Today, this plant is grown commercially in Europe. St Johns Wort has been used for hundreds of years in the treatment of depression as it is highly respected for its anti-depressant effects. The use of St Johns Wort as an antidepressant dates back to ancient Greece, but Native Americans also used it. This is because of its sedative qualities, which have been proven to the point that today, some insurance companies are even covering this supplement.

St. Johns Wort is an excellent homeopathical way in which to treat depression. This is a bright yellow flower with ray-like petals that make it look like a sun. Sometimes this plant is also known as Klamath weed or Goat Weed. Besides being useful in treating mild to moderate depression, St Johns Wort is also useful in treating unrest, anxiety and nerve pain as well. This is because of its sedative qualities, which have been proven to the point that today, some insurance companies are even covering this supplement.

While this is not a powerful drug, in the sense that it won’t bring you a quick recovery, but it does have excellent long-term results. Nevertheless, studies have proven that if a person is suffering from mild to moderate depression taking a minimum of 300mg of St. Johns Wort, three times a day, will dramatically help a person. Other studies have shown that 1800 mg per day is more effective. Either way, this is equivalent to taking between 0.4 and 2.7 mg of an antidepressant medication daily. This is why in some countries, such as Germany, St Johns Wort is actually prescribed far more commonly than synthetic antidepressant medications when it comes to treating depression. Most likely, the effectiveness of this herb is due to its involvement in inhibiting Serotonin reuptake, which is what conventional SSRI antidepressants actually do. The major active constituents in this herb include hyperforin, hypericin, flavonoids, tannins, and possibly a few other biologically active constituents.

This supplement can be taken as an herbal tea (this is made from its flowers and roots), which has a pleasant, although somewhat bitter, taste. It can also be taken in the form of a pill or capsule. It will take at least one week to see any improvement in a person’s condition. The nice thing is that this treatment can be continued for a long period of time since the herb usually does not have any side effects. However, if you are on other medications (i.e. cancer drugs, HIV drugs, or contraceptive pills), you will need to check with your doctor prior to taking St Johns Wort since this herb can strongly interact with these other medications. For instance, one type of reaction that you may encounter is skin sensitivity when you are in the sun. Therefore, when taking this supplement you should stay out of the sun as much as possible.

When everything is taken into consideration, medical doctors strongly feel that St Johns Wort is a safe and effective herb that can be used to treat mild to moderate forms of depression.

Depression is not something that is going to go away without first facing it. Facing depression can be a critical step in the healing process. Many reasons exist about why a person would feel depressed, with a few including: a break up, a death in the family, changes in jobs, changes in lifestyle, changes in a persons hormones, a miscarriage, infidelity in the marriage and so many other reasons. Some types of depression are medically related, being brought about by memories, reaching a certain age, or the family history that involves depression.

Depression is a state of mind, one that only can be faced by the person that it is affecting. The support of everyone and every thing around the person who is suffering with depression can be a very solid start in overcoming depression. If you feel that someone you love or know is battling with depression, the first thing that you can do is just be there for them. Help the person realize that you love them no matter what, even no matter what they feel is that bad in their life at the moment.

Those who are dealing and suffering with depression need to realize or be told what the problem is. If no one is going to say or talk about depression aloud, the problem can’t be faced, can’t be tackled. As a person who has depression realizes they need help, and that they need to rely on others to feel better about their selves and their situations, this can be a solid step to looking towards and for treatment. Treatment for depression could include natural methods, acpuncture, it could include the use of medications, or therapy in one on one format, or in group therapy.

All types of depression are different. For the person who is suffering with depression due to a break up of a marriage or a long term relationship, one has to work through these types of feelings to become self reliant again, to feel whole and confident. This type of situation could require medication but generally for the short term. Talking about the problems, and learning from the situation, the person will become stronger, sorting through and talking about their feelings. Depression does not have to be a life changing event, one that is going to stay with you forever, but it can be a burden at the time that is occurring. Face depression, and be there for the person who is fighting within their selves to feel better, and to feel whole again. Talk with the person, and give them the support they need during this time.

Depression is a chemical imbalanced that has many causes. A chemical imbalance could be from a change in health or even a change in hormones. However, those who are stricken with serious terminal diseases are more likely to be affected by depression that any of the other causes. Depression will co-exist with other illnesses, rather it be physical or mental. Some of the illness that are popular to co exist with depression are bipolar disorder, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Many people will become shocked when they learn that they have an illness and then the shock will turn into depression. They don’t yet understand the illness and they are in denial when the depression sets in. Recent studies show that those who have co-exiting disorders or illnesses with their depression are being treated for AIDS, cancers, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes. With treatment, the depression has been able to be controlled and by treating the depression, the patient’s health improves greatly.

When it comes to mental illnesses that depression will co-exist with, Bipolar disorder is the most common. Bipolar is a form of a manic depression that is treatable with certain medicines. When it comes to those with bipolar disorder, they are more than two times as likely to want to commit suicide. This is because people with bipolar disorder are unpredictable and have mood swings.

One minute, things could be okay, and the next minute they could be extremely upset. Anything can trigger a mood swing and that’s why depression must be treated as well as the bipolar disorder. If a person with bipolar disorder is not treated for their illness, it could be deadly. They could end up harming himself or herself or someone else. Their state of unpredictable actions and unstableness is another reason why a person needs to seek medical attention.

If you know someone who is going through a tough time or dealing with an illness of any kind, you should try to keep an open mind and look for signs of depression. Once you have seen anything that could lead to them harming themselves or harming others, you should seek medical advice.

A large number of women around the world suffer from postpartum depression after giving birth. Many people, especially women dealing with postpartum depression or pregnant women concerned about developing it, wonder about the causes of postpartum depression. However, the causes of postpartum depression are not cut-and-dry. While there is no surefire way to prevent postpartum depression, there are various explanations, as well as risk factors that are linked to the causes of postpartum depression.

Many doctors believe that postpartum depression can be triggered by major biological and hormonal changes that occur immediately after pregnancy and childbirth. Other possible causes of postpartum depression are associated with risk factors. This means that some women are more likely than others to develop postpartum depression.

For example, if you have a personal history of depression, or if you experienced high anxiety during your pregnancy, you may be at higher risk of postpartum depression. Other risk factors that may increase your likelihood of getting postpartum depression include age-very young or older mothers may be at higher risk; an unplanned pregnancy; an unsupportive partner; marital or financial difficulties; a recent serious life change; and a family history of depression, anxiety, abuse or addictions.

Other causes of postpartum depression seem to be situational. A long or traumatic labor and delivery, obstetric complications, a difficult recovery or a frustrating breastfeeding experience, as well as insufficient sleep, lack of help from others and no breaks from the baby can all contribute to postpartum depression.

However, it is important to remember that there are no guaranteed causes of postpartum depression. Women who don’t have any of the “risk factors” can still get postpartum depression. Similarly, a woman may have a short, uncomplicated labor, a great bonding experience with an easygoing baby and plenty of help, yet still develop postpartum depression.

Depression is a treatable illness that has affected millions of Americans each year. It is an illness in which the brain’s chemicals, neurotransmitters, become imbalanced. Many people think that a person can just “snap out” of it, but the truth is, the chemical imbalance can only be treated with therapy and medicine. Some people have depression more than others. For mild cases, depression can be treated by simply talking about how you feel and about the things that affect a person’s life.

Severe cases are a bit difficult. Many can become catatonic, physical sick, and extremely ill because of their depression. For severe cases, a person will be medicated and therapy is needed. A person may even be committed to a mental facility so that others can monitor them more closely for their own safety and the safety of others. Depression is now being linked to genetics. It’s not something that you can “catch” from others and it isn’t something shameful. Everyone hits bottom sometimes, and sometimes you hit bottom harder than others. Depression can be from a traumatic event, hormones, change in health, illness, or drugs.

People who suffer from depression are not just sad, they are lost. They will have long periods of unhappiness and may even become very different. They may become violent and angered or they could become a mop and helpless. You can tell when someone’s depressed because they begin to carry themselves differently. They will slouch, become indecisive, and will withdraw from close friends and family.

Depression doesn’t allow lead to hurtful thoughts or suicide. A person can be depressed without going that far. However, most people who get depressed think about suicide at one point. This is when a person needs the most support. No matter how hard they will try to pull away from you, make sure that you let them know that you care about them. This is the only advice that friends and family should try. As for treatment, the person has to want to change their life before therapy and medicine will help. Remember, the person who suffers from depression has to reach out to recover.

It is defined as negative emotions and consists of fear, worry and sometimes even physical symptoms such as nausea or chest pains. This complex emotion is composed of numerous elements, some of which are somatic or cognitive and thus the body prepares itself to deal with this type of external threat by speeding up the heart rate, slowing down the digestive system, and increasing the blood pressure. While some of these processes are voluntary, many of them are involuntary. Studies have shown that this is because anxiety comes from two different regions of the brain: the hippocampus and the amygdala. While anxiety is normal, a person who has excessive amounts of anxiety may have a medical issue. This is because those who have too much anxiety usually have a feeling of dread or extreme terror, which in turn, can oftentimes lead to depression, phobias, panic disorders, generalized anxiety disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorders. (In a person with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, a person has an obsession or compulsion to a specific type of behavior. People with this disorder have a need to compulsively do something in order to relieve their anxiety)

Anxiety is an important emotion, which is designed to help increase a person’s survival rate.

There are two main types of depression that stem from anxiety: agitated depression and akathitic depression. Both of these types of depression include suffering from a phobia wherein there is an abnormal amount of fear of a specific object or situation. Most phobias are due to a person’s overactive imagination leading to an irrational fear. However, it is important to note that akathitic depression is not as common as agitated depression. Akathitic depression is simply a state of depression, which presents itself as anxiety without the symptoms of panic. Agitated depression is far more common.

Agitated depression is a depressive state, which presents itself as anxiety. It includes suicide, insomnia, unspecified panic and a general sense of dread. This type of depression is treated with antidepressants, however this may only increase a person’s heart rate even more. In such a case an anticonvulsant such as Depakote(r) and/or lithium may also be administered in order to reduce the person’s anxiety. Of course, therapy is also an important part of the treatment process. Through this therapy a person is helped to get away from the source of their anxiety.

This form of depression is often coupled with panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder. A person who has panic disorder has panic attacks, which include dizziness or breathing problems. Panic attacks usually reach their peak within 10 minutes of their onset. These equally affect both men and women. On the other hand, generalized panic disorder is characterized by long periods of anxiety, which are not related to any specific object or situation.

Studies have also shown that even mild symptoms of anxiety can have a major impact upon the course of depression. These studies have also shown that when a depressed person is anxious that person will have a longer course period toward remission and a higher inability to return to their daily routines. This link between anxiety and depression can also be demonstrated biologically in a person’s heart rate. Therefore, anytime that anxiety is present with depression, the anxiety is an important factor to be considered.

Lithium has been prescribed for those with manic depression for decades. It is given to patients with mood disorders that tend to be disabling or recurring. People who have a high risk of suicide are given lithium because it has been proven to reduce the rate of suicide with depression. The purpose of the medication is to prevent a relapse of serious depression symptoms. It use to be given just to those with bipolar disease, but it is now being given to those who have any kind of mental unstableness because it will calm the mood swings and help a person feel normal once again.

When it comes to bipolar depression, a person has strong suicidal tendencies and the premature death is caused by stress-related illness or from substance abuse. In many studies of lithium, it has been shown that it can decrease the chance of someone committing suicide and it also helps take a little bit of the edge off. Lithium was not made to make a person stop thinking about death, but it was made to stabilize the mood swings. Once the mood swings are stable and a person feels a bit more “normal” usually, the thoughts of suicide or death will go away. It also has been proven to help decrease the side effects of serious depressions and bipolar behavior once taken for a couple years.

Like all drugs, lithium has its effects. It does decrease the rate of suicides or even attempts, but it has been proven that once patients are off the medication, their condition will worsen. Many people will commit suicide after being on lithium for long periods of time and then taken off the medication. Within a year, most patients will at least attempt to end their life.

However, even though, lithium can control a person’s suicidal tendencies, it cannot control the disorder that causes them. It doesn’t help a person’s mental health other than the fact that it doesn’t allow a person to have suicidal thoughts because of their depression. Depression is not cured by lithium, but the side effects will become less severe.

Postpartum depression and anxiety are realities many pregnant women may not consider, and that many women suffering from these conditions may not want to admit. Overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety can be very challenging, but it can be done.

Overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety begins with admitting it to yourself so you can actively seek help. It’s also important for you to tell someone and share your feelings-your partner, your mother, a close friend, a mom’s support group-so they can help you on the road to overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety. Having these support people available, even if it’s just on the phone, can do a world of good in overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety.

Furthermore, ensure you get adequate help. Delivered meals, help with the baby and cleaning the house will all aid in overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety. In addition, getting enough sleep and rest is critical to your success in overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety. If you can’t sleep when the baby sleeps, find someone to watch the baby. Getting out of the house with your baby and getting away from your baby regularly is also essential for overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety. Run errands, go for a walk, have coffee with a girlfriend or visit a relative.

It’s also critical to talk to your doctor who will be able to further advise you in overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety. Counseling and other forms of therapy may be recommended. For some women, medication may be beneficial and even necessary for overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety pills.

Finally, remember that comparing yourself to other moms might only aggravate your symptoms of depression and anxiety. All moms experience hard times, especially in the beginning. The bottom line for overcoming postpartum depression and anxiety is to talk about it and get all the help you can.

Everyone will experience bad moods or short periods of feelings blue, but major depression is different. It will actually limit the ability to function normally. Many teenagers who experience depression are written off as just being a teenager, but four out of every one hundred teenagers will become serious depressed and many of them are ignored and they die from it.

When you are in your teenage years, you have a lot to deal with. You have your grades, college, sex, drugs, and relationships, and losses to deal with before you are even 16 years old. Some of the added pressure from parents seem to make things worse.

Some of the side effects of teenage depression is the basic signs of depression. You will notice changes in their eating and sleeping habits. They will lose or gain a lot of weight. You may notice that they are missing more school, grades will drop, and they will become an issue at school.

They will also withdraw from friends and family. Some will stop doing anything that they once enjoyed and became full of rage or anxiety. They will overreact to simple things and they will have strong feelings of adequacy. Because they don’t feel whole, they will turn to sex, drugs, or alcohol; which will build up their thoughts of suicide. Those who are most at risk are those who have panic attacks, delusions, insomnia, or hallucinations.

Depression will make teenagers do a lot of things that are harmful. They will begin to dabble in drugs and self injury. A recent test has shown that thousands of middle school, high school, and college students in American turn to self injury to help deal with their depression. Many claim that it makes them feel like they aren’t themselves. It makes them feel somewhat high so they can distract themselves.

Depression has been linked with high suicide rates when it comes to adolescents. It has been indicated that children as young as five has committed suicide. Those who have depression are possible potential victims. They don’t have to show any violence and reasoning. Teenagers learn how to conceal themselves and show the perfect image of what is expected of them.
