Whether traveling in the wilderness or just relaxing in your backyard, you never know when the need for first aid might hit you. From a simple bruise to a deep cut or a first-degree burn to a fractured limb; any kind of accident requires first aid treatment before you can fetch for the doctor. In such circumstances it become necessary for every single person to be aware regarding first aid treatment and its implications. Its magnitude can be felt the way several schooling institutes have made the preaching of first aid course an integral and compulsory part of their curriculum. This reinstates the responsibility each individual has towards not only its loved ones but to society in general. In the instance of any calamity every human being should be equipped with the basics of life saving techniques. And this can be only provided by a first aid course. Let us take a look to what exactly does a first aid course constitutes as its syllabus?

The contents:

The course teaches what are the steps you need to follow when faced with day-to-day dilemmas. The Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation i.e. the CPR is the first line of action taught in the course. It the process followed when encountered with a person who has fainted due to lack of oxygen reaching his/her lungs. This situation can be seen either when the victim was pulled out form water while drowning or with an asthma attack or any condition when the patient loses conscious. This is when the person giving first aid is supposed to give mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration to clear the windpipes of the patient and make the air pass through. The other training itineraries taught are as follows:

1) In case of snakebite, you need to tie the sides of the bitten area tightly so as to stop the poison to spread in other body parts.

2) When the patient has suffered burn wounds the immediate remedy should be to put cold water on the injury and not wrap it up with a blanket as traditionally assumed. Pouring water on the burns not only subsidizes the smolder but also relieves the pain and the sting.

3) When you have a broken bone situation, what you need to do is align the broken limb to its original position and tie a hard straight piece of wood or any other supporting material to it. This will support the bone and reduce the pain as it restricts the broken bone’s movement.

Above mentioned are just a handful of tips out of the entire course of first aid. By the examples it is evident that first aid is an undoubted requirement of daily life.

When we travel around the world, especially in developing countries, it is always important to have your own sterile first aid equipment as well as standard bandages and dressings. Having these items means that if you have to be treated by a doctor or a dentist you know that they will be operating with surgically sterile needles, syringes and scalpels. We should keep pain killers especially for travel kit, scissors, medicines, bandages etc. In travel almost many people vomit as with diarrhea, the important point is to replace lost fluids. Frequent small drinks, if possible using ones that contain salt and sugar, are preferred. While traveling we should carry extra water.

Packing the kit:

1 An adequate supply of any medications routinely taken by any member of the party, all correctly labeled. Beware restrictions in some countries about what medicines can be brought in. Check with your travel agent. If worried get letters from your doctor confirming the drugs prescribed.
2 First-aid items. A supply of plasters, wound dressings, antiseptic creams and an elastic bandage for sprains.
3 Water-sterilizations tablets.
4 Sun creams and protection

Always be ready for all potential emergencies at home, in the car, outdoors or on the water. From cuts and stings to minor aches and pains, this kit prepares you for those small everyday emergencies.

The kit includes:
Extra-strength non-aspirin tablets
1.Antibiotic ointment packs
2. Antiseptic cleansing wipes
Travel kit includes:
1 adhesive bandages
2 first aid antibacterial cream
3 waterless antibacterial hand sanitizer
4 aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever
5 anti-nausea medication
6 anti-diarrhea medication
7 antacid tablets
8 seasickness remedy
9 prescription medications

All the items should be in unbreakable containers with tight fitting lids. Accidents, injuries, and emergencies happen to everyone, eventually. Properly preparing for these instances is all-important. The advantage of making your own kit is that you can specialize it according to your needs, and it generally will cost you less money to assemble your own. Purchase travel first aid kits with any additional supplies like you or you family might need. We should include a plastic bag with a mild solution of soap and water, along with paper towels for a quick and inexpensive way to wash sticky hands

Around 50 symbols were designed for use at the venues across the globe. These are used at crossroads of modern life i.e., in airports, railway stations and other transportation hubs and at large international events. This system of 50 symbols is produced through collaboration between AIGA and the US Department of Transportation. This is an idea of addressing universal communication need. Prior to these, various international organizations had designed symbols to guide passengers and pedestrians at transportation venues. But there was a need to address the required range of complex messages and which addressed people of different backgrounds and were clearly legible at a distance. The ‘red cross’ is not a public domain symbol for first aid which is contrary to popular belief. The symbol of first aid was designed due to this effort and green cross on white background is used as a First Aid symbol. This is recommended by International Standards Organization. This differs from the St. Lazarus Cross in which the arm ends of the green cross are taken to borders and not shortened like first aid green cross.

History of Green Cross

Green colour is very important for having symbol in its first place. Around two hundred years ago, Wilhelm Sattler produced a emerald pigment for artists. It was very popular for its warm hue, and the copper arsenite which gave the paint a level of permanence. But the poison which it carried killed some artists unfortunately. Since then copper aceto-arsenite was more used as a rat poison by sweepers. After some years, ironically though, this green cross, along with yellow cross and blue cross, was used to identify the contents of a deadly artillery gas shell during the periods of First World War.

Conclusion

The green crosses are also known as Vert Crosses. Of course this term ‘vert’ means fresh emerald green colour. It has a bright tincture symbolizing vitality like a young plant .the pale green is contrasted with this. The pale green is emblematic of death and associated with bad luck by some people. Although such colors can portray ecologically friendly image, but for above mentioned reasons, it is not used in cars or vehicles. Green colour is always used in institutions like prisons and famously in hospitals as it has a soothing effect. This brings us back to the colour and symbol chosen for first aid.

A good first aid kit is very necessary for emergencies. There should be a first aid kit in your car, at your job site, and at home. The more complete your first aid kit is the better you can deal with emergencies as they come up. One should keep the first aid kit ready for emergency. It will be very late if we wait for emergencies. The main objectives of first aid is to relieve suffering, to save a life and to prevent further physical or psychological injuries until you can reach or be reached by qualified health care personnel. Consider all the possible emergencies which can happen.

If you do not want to prepare your own kits, there are very good prepackaged kits in the market. Go thoroughly their contents carefully so that you know whether or not the kit is appropriate as there are also kits which are nothing more than band aids. You will need to know whether the kit you are purchasing has perishables such as aspirin in it so that they can be replaced when they expire. If you decide to prepare your own kits, you will find that many supplies will come packed in larger quantities than you find in a single prepared kit. Divide the packages into different kits you are making. First aid kits should be kept in containers that are labeled. One should keep the box in a single location in your house, car and work place. Everyone in the house should know where it is.

What a first aid kit should contain?

Some basic items that all first aid kits should contain are a Rectal Thermometer which can be the glass kind or the newer electronic kind. The electronic ones beep when they finish registering the temperature and they are slightly smaller than the glass kind. They also do not break as easily. They have a battery which will need replacing and they are more expensive then the glass ones. A lubricating jelly to lubricate thermometer, instant hot and cold compresses, adhesive tape to secure bandages – both non-stick tape (i.e. Dermicel or another brand of paper tape) and water proof tape, blunt tipped scissors, bandage scissors etc.

Conclusion:

Before you give any animal any medication, please consult your veterinarian about the dosage and the side effects. You should call your veterinarian for your animal’s dosages. That way you can place a list in your first aid kit with specifics for your pets before any emergency happens.

Dog bites sometimes it could be very serious. If the animal is suffering from rabies it is possibilities of being transmitted to the person bitten. If the dog that bites a person should not be killed. It should be kept under observation for a ten-day period. And if the dog remains healthy after this period then the risk of rabies to the person bitten is low. There is still the frighten of rabies occurring sometimes, months or years after the bite even if the animal does not die during the ten-day period.

The dog bitten management:

1 Wipe the saliva away from the wound using a clean cloth. Do not come with the saliva that gets wiped off.
2 Wash the wound thoroughly with plenty of water and soap.
3 Cover the wound with a dry sterile cloth.
4 Get medical aid or send the person to hospital as soon as possible.

The important measures are to irrigate the wound thoroughly and take oral antibiotics for five days.

Signs and symptoms:

Some cases of the bite will not break the skin but it causes damage to the underlying tendons and joints. The skin is broken there and it is the additional possibility of infection as well as injury to tendons and nerves. Dogs have powerful jaws and it can cause crushing injuries to bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Signs of an infection include:
5 Warmth around the wound
6 Swelling
7 Pain
8 A pus discharge
9 Redness around the wound
10 Signs of damage to tendons and nerves.

First aid:
If the wound is superficial, then wash the area thoroughly. Use soap and water or an antiseptic such as hydrogen peroxide or alcohol. And apply an antibiotic ointment and cover with a non-stick bandage. So watch the area carefully to see if there are signs of damaged nerves or tendons. But the wound should heal within a week to 10 days. If it does not, or if you see signs of infection or damage to nerves and tendons, then visit doctor immediately. If the wound is bleeding then apply direct pressure with a clean dry cloth.

One should be able to distinguish a minor affliction from a true emergency and how to address the situation. You should take your cat to a vet immediately at any sign of odd behavior or any symptoms of illness or injury. You should have your vet examine your cat at least once a year, semi – annually if your cat is 10 years of age or older. This will keep your cat disease or infection free. You should take immediate veterinary care if your cat has been hit by a vehicle, has suffered any type of traumatic injury, has any sign of dehydration or shock, has been throwing up food or clear liquid regularly over a 24 hour period etc.

Symptoms

The odor of your kitty’s breath sometimes indicates the health condition that you might not otherwise be aware of. For example, if the cat has a urine-like smell to her breath, this could mean that she is suffering from kidney disease. If the cat has a sweet or fruity scent to her breath, this could indicate that she may have become diabetic (this is especially true if she has been drinking large amounts of water and/or is urinating more frequently than usual). Liver disorders are sometimes discovered when a cat exhibits a breath that is foul, and is also accompanied by vomiting, loss of appetite, swelling of the abdomen, and/or yellowing (jaundice) of the eyes or gums. Do you know how to make sure that your kitten has enough fluids? Watch your veterinary carefully when they test your kitten for hydration. He will do this by gently lifting the skin along the cat’s back, often around the shoulder area. If the cat is hydrated, the skin will snap back into place very quickly. If, however, it is dehydrated, the skin will not have the normal elasticity, and will stay up in a ridge.

Conclusion

A conscious injured cat will be in extreme fear and may react aggressively. Pain and confusion may lead to its confusion. One should be very careful with a cat when it is injured or not well. To approach an injured cat, one should crouch down and slowly advance towards the cat avoiding direct eye contact.

Every family has tried remedies when it comes to first aid measures. When someone becomes ill or injured there is a short period of time before you can get medical assistance. It is this time that is most critical for the victim. What you do, or don’t do during that period of time can make the difference between life and death. The following are tips for this particular period.

Tip when no medication available:

For burns aloe vera plant is good. Simply cut one of the plant’s thick leaves and smear the juice of the aloe vera plant directly onto the burn. Keep the burn under cold water for several minutes to stop the burn. They must be cleaned properly and handled carefully. Bee stings can be treated with normal mud. If mud isn’t available, a handful of soil will do. A wet aspirin can be placed over the bee sting. Insect bites can be treated with meat tenderizer. Acne can be lessened with the use of oranges and lemons. Wash face, and put a piece of fresh citric fruit over the entire surface. Leave for few minutes, and then wash off. For dry skin, try cooler baths and add oatmeal to the water. For dry hands and feet and crack, use vitamin E lotion, avoid hot baths, and allow only minimum exposure to hot and cold. Headaches can be treated with a hot bath and darkened room. If a nurse is available, hand and foot massages are excellent for reducing headache pain. For small children, it’s possible to expel the excess gas by laying the child on back, bending the legs, and gently pushing the thighs up into the abdominal area. This works for adults too. Important thing to remember is that the rectum must be at the highest point. Gravity will do the rest. Belly aches can be reduced with the use of peppermint. Sometimes peppermint will cause the patient to vomit. That’s not bad, usually after expelling the offending contents; the patient will feel well again. Canker sores take place in the mouth. These are quite painful. One therapy that appears to work is to dab salt on the sore. It hurts for a minute, but, for whatever reason, the sore usually clears up immediately. If you can’t put salt directly on the sore, gargle with saltwater.

Conclusion:

Again, as with any medical condition that does not readily go away, it is sensible to obtain professional medical assistance from a physician. But these tips and therapies will surely help when medication is not at all available. If the pain persists physician should be contacted immediately.

First aid kits are a necessity everywhere. Accidents can happen at anytime and anyplace. It is therefore important to know how to use the first aid kit. One should have the complete knowledge of what to find in a first aid kit and more importantly how to use those things. For this reason first aid training becomes important. One should know what he is doing or about to do completely. It has been proven by some researchers that first aid training can reduce on-the-job injuries. On job injuries can do ample amount of damage to the employers and the employees. Not only in workplaces but first aid training comes handy even at homes and schools.

How important is first aid training?

Indeed it is very important as any kind of delay in dealing with injuries can cause a lot of problem. If the people around the victim are not aware about how to react, it can become very difficult. Following are some reasons that tell you why it is important to have first aid training:
1 It makes people more safety conscious; thereby there will be noticeable reduction in the number of accidents.
2 It can obviously save lives. In case of grave injuries, immediate actions can e taken by a knowledgeable individual.
3 It will make people feel more comfortable and secure. Especially in schools and homes.

How is first aid training done?

It is not at all a very long course. it is only a few hours of training that is possible to complete within a couple of days. The trainees become familiar with the contents of the first aid kit, How to use these contents and the various ways to react in emergency situation. The training gives the participants a critical knowledge and the confidence to effectively manage an emergency, without panic or confusion. They are also given training of how to give basic injections, about painkillers. Most importantly, they are given enough training about bandaging injuries and controlling the flow of blood. Training comes handy during emergencies at work places and homes. It gives participants the basic skills needed to reduce shock, contain injuries and in many cases, save lives.

There are many institutes that provide a wide range of courses especially for first aid training. These courses are short. There are few basic ones that are merely 5 to 6 hour long. More information regarding such courses is available on many site on the internet.

The sting of a wasp is unlike from the typical honey bee sting in that the latter leaves the stinger attached with the venom sac within the victim. The two greatest risks from nearly all insect stings are allergic reaction which occasionally, in some individuals could be fatal and infection more common and less serious. Symptoms of a bee sting are generally there is immediate pain and swelling. There are some who can have severe allergic reactions characterized by difficulty breathing, hives, itching, and swelling over the body. The redness and swelling can often cover a huge area of skin that can last for up to 48 hours. These great reactions do not necessarily mean it is an allergic reaction.

Treatment to be conducted:

If you have been stung by a bee, one should follow these instructions. Bees go away leaving behind a stinger attached to a venom sac. Do not try to pull it out as this may discharge more venom; instead gently scrape it. Wash the area cautiously with soap and water. This should be continued numerous times a day until the skin is healed. Apply a cold or ice pack, wrapped in cloth for few minutes. Apply a paste of baking soda and water and let it be for 15 to 20 minutes. Take acetaminophen for ache. Other remedies for pain and itching may consist of dabbing on a tiny amount of household ammonia. Over-the-counter products which contain ammonia are also obtainable for insect stings. Use an antihistamine, such as Benadryl or topical hydrocortisone ointment for the itching, if your doctor agrees. Be sure to follow dosage information for children. Seek instant medical attention if you are stung in the mouth or nose as swelling may block airways. Also seek emergency care if any of the following symptoms are present, as these could indicate an allergic reaction. If there are large areas of swelling, abnormal breathing, tightness in throat or chest, dizziness, hives (red splotches), fainting, nausea or vomiting, persistent pain or swelling.
Conclusion:

If any symptoms of an allergic reaction grow, the stung area should be kept below the level of the heart, and urgent medical help should be called for immediately. One should wear light-colored clothing as it attracts fewer bees than dark clothing. Rub the stinger out from the stung area, never squeeze or pull out the stinger. Persons with severe allergic reactions to insect stings should consider wearing a medical ID bracelet and carrying an insect allergy kit where suitable.

The first aid safety should be always in the houses because we can’t say when it may require.

The first aid safety requires in companies because:
1. Protect the employees
2. Increase employee productivity
3. Promote a safe working environment

First aid products:
1. Bandages and ointments
2. Burn care
3. Eye care
4. Tablets

First aid products should contain everything for treatment of minor workplace injuries and illness.

First aid kits can be prepared in the houses:
For preparing first aid kit in the house you need these things:
1. Adhesive bandages in assorted sizes.
2. Gauze pads and roller gauze in assorted sizes.
3. Adhesive medical tape.
4. Scissors to cut bandages and tape.
5. Thermometer.
6. Tweezers, to remove splinters and ticks.
7. Calamine lotion, for itchy rashes.

Safety for eyes:
We should wear eyeglasses when we ride bikes or vehicles to protect our eyes from dust particles and sunrays. Sunglasses protect our eyes from dusts. We get different eyeglasses in the market for our protection of eyes. Safety glasses with tinted lenses for outdoor use. Eyeglasses are of different types which are; a) welding eyeglasses, b)eyeglasses for outdoor, c)eyeglasses for indoor.

The first care given to casualties before actual treatment by medical personnel can be made available is termed as first aid. Some of the basic activities operated during providing first aid for military purposes are opening the airway and restore breathing, stop the bleeding, Dress and bandage the wounds to prevent infection and Prevent shock. Stopping the bleeding is also one of the important steps that should be taken. It is done by applying a field dressing and manual pressure then elevating the injured limb and again applying a pressure and a tourniquet. Military first aid kits are used in all these cases and also for all other various reasons. There are other injuries and accidents for which first aid kit is used. Some of them are shock prevention and cold weather protection.

Military first aid kit

The Contents of a military first aid kit should be: First Aid Guide, Cohesive Gauze, Sterile Gauze Pads, Butterfly closures, Fabric Bandages, Povidine – Iodine Prep Pads, Antiseptic Towlettes, Needle, Moleskin, Mini Strips, Combine Dressing, Triangular Bandage and Roll Tape. The first aid guide is the most important content in any given first aid kit. It provides information about various accidents, situations and procedure of how to use the kit. It should cover a broad range of topics in precise in easy-to-understand language. The Army points out, most of the time soldiers have to rely on their own skills and knowledge to survive as Medical personnel are not always available in the field. The First Aid Manual for Soldiers addresses the skills and knowledge necessary for many life-threatening situations along with emphasis on treating oneself and aiding others. The manual also emphasizes prompt and effective action in sustaining life and preventing or minimizing further suffering.

Precautions and Measures

The contents of the standardized first aid kit should be rescue and transportation procedures, general health maintenance, and decontamination procedures. It should have clear language, concise diagrams, and field-tested organization, the First Aid Manual for Soldiers should be on every fieldsman’s shelf. There should be some simple precautions taken during providing first aid like casualty should not be given to eat or drink. Also, morphine should not be given to a person with a severe head injury.

Bleeding is a process of loss of blood from the blood vessels. Severe or continuous bleeding may lead to collapse and death. Thus, the person doing first aid must try to control severe bleeding. The total amount of blood in the human body varies according to size. An adult can lose 500 ml of blood not having any harm, but the loss of 300 ml might cause death in an infant. Major bleeding may be a life-threatening condition requiring instant attention. Bleeding can be external or internal. Bleeding may be from an artery, a major blood vessel which carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart all through the body. It may be from a vein, which takes the blood back to the heart to be oxygenated or bleeding may be from a capillary, the smallest of our body’s blood vessels.

Treatment:

First aid for bleeding is intended to stop the bleeding, prevent infection, and prevent shock. Apply direct pressure on the injury. Use a dressing, if available. If a dressing is not accessible, use a rag, towel, piece of clothing or your hand only. If bleeding continues, and you do not suspect a fracture, raise the wound above the level of the heart and carry on to apply direct pressure. If the bleeding isn’t controlled, the next step is to apply pressure at a pressure point. For wounds of the arms or hands, pressure points are situated on the inside of the wrist or on the inside of the upper arm. For wounds of the legs, the pressure tip is at the crease in the groin. Steps 1 and 2 should be sustained with use of the pressure points. The last step to control bleeding is to apply a pressure bandage over the injury. Note the difference between a dressing and a bandage. A dressing may be gauze square applied directly to a wound, while a bandage, such as roll gauze, is used to hold a dressing in place. Pressure must be used in applying the bandage. After the bandage is in place, it is important to test the pulse to make sure circulation is not interrupted. When faced with the need to control major bleeding, it is not important to use a sterile dressing. Use whatever you have at hand and work quickly.

Conclusion:

First aid for internal bleeding is. If the wound appears to be a simple bruise, apply cold packs to slow bleeding, relieve pain and reduce swelling. If you suspect harsh internal bleeding, monitor the patient and be prepared to administer CPR if required. So this is the method to save a person from the consequences which can occur from bleeding.

It is surprising to know that many backpackers and campers indulge in their pastime without any sort of first aid equipment, but accidents can and do happen on a regular basis. By giving just a little time and money you can prepare yourself for most emergencies.

How to prepare a camping first aid kit

While preparing a first aid kit, you have two options either buy a pre-made one at a store or build your own. It is always better to build your own, as you can personalize it to your own needs. If you remember spending a past trip with a badly upset stomach, then make sure that it doesn’t happen again by including some Tums. Though personalizing your kit is recommended, just be sure to include all the essentials like flashlight with batteries, take a small one that tucks easily into a corner. Carry a whistle with you (one for each camper). These serve two purposes, firstly they are used to locate a camper if he/she gets separated and secondly the noise also keeps bears away when hiking in back country. Also carry tweezers which can be used for removing slivers and ticks, a bandage tape and a small pair of scissors to cut it with, band-aides for general cuts and scrapes, hydrocortisone cream for itches. You can pick up a cheap disposable thermometer at any drug store, burn ointment, extra matches or a lighter, anesthetic spray, antiseptic to wash out cuts and scrapes, adult Tylenol and at last a small first-aide handbook which provides instructions on what to do in most emergencies. If you are carrying children along with you in that case you need to be even more careful and carry appropriate first aid for them. One should not take any risks when it comes to children. One should also include a children’s Benadryl, a children’s Dimetapp or Sudafed and a children’s Motrin in the first-aid kit.

Conclusion

With a just a little common sense and preparation you can be ready for most common emergencies.

After washing it wash your hands with soap and water. Always recommend wearing disposable medical gloves, to avoid spreading germs when cleaning or treating a wound. Keep the wound clean and wash the injury with a mild soap and lukewarm water. A dirty mark or the other wound that isn’t properly cleaned it will leave a scar or tattoo on the skin. We should leave the cuts or wounds open in the night to dry so that it doesn’t cause pus. To keep the wound free from germs we should use some ointment on the wound. Apply direct pressure on the wound until bleeding stops. Put sterile bandage on wound.

Signs of infected wound:
1. Swelling
2. Redness
3. Pain
4. May cause fever
5. Presence of pus.

First aid for cuts and scrapes:

1. First step is to wash gently around the wound with warm water and soap to remove dirt.
2. Cover the wound with a bandage or a piece of sterile gauze.

Cuts and scrapes can all result in bleeding. Take aspirin or ibuprofen for pain. Be careful when you take the bandage off. Don’t take aspirin everyday because it will cause to blood clotting. We should soak the wound in warm water for 2 to 3 times a day. Quickly cover the wound with dressing, preferable sterile and continue direct pressure on the wound it will stop the flow of the blood. Don’t use an elastic bandage because it may cut off the blood supply. Small wounds can be treated in home by gently clipping the cotton around the wound with a clean scissors. Use warm water or saline to flush out the wound and remove all the dirt and debris from the areas. The best medicine to clean the cuts and scrapes is to use Savlon liquid it may burn but it keeps the cuts free from germs. Nowadays you are getting sprays and ointments, gels to put on the cuts.

Heart attacks are among the leading cause of death in the World. A heart attack happens when one or more of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart get blocked. When this occurs, cells in the heart start dying when they do not get blood for vital nourishment. If a large part of the heart is deprived of blood, the heart stops beating and the victim suffers Cardiac arrest. When a victim’s heart stops beating, they require Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) which provides vital oxygen through rescue breathing and which maintains circulation through chest compressions. Proper training is needed to perform CPR, however any heart attack can lead to Cardiac Arrest and it is therefore vital for first aiders to recognize the early warning signs of a heart attack so the victim can receive prompt professional attention. A heart attack victim whose heart is still beating has a higher chance of survival than a victim whose heart has stopped. Most heart attack victims who die give in within 2 hours after having their heart attack.

Heart attacks are among the leading cause of death in the World. A heart attack victim whose heart is still beating has a higher chance of survival than a victim whose heart has stopped. Most heart attack victims who die give in within 2 hours after having their heart attack.

Many of these victims could be saved if bystanders know the symptoms of a heart attack and get the victim to a hospital quickly. Indeed, many victims of heart attacks think they are experiencing Heartburn or other minor discomfort when in fact their life is in danger. The most significant sign of a heart attack is chest pain. The victim may describe it as pressure, a feeling of tightness in the chest, aching, crushing, fullness or tightness, constricting or heavy pain. The pain may be located in the center of the chest although it is not uncommon for the pain to radiate to one or both shoulders or arms or to the neck, jaw or back. Other than pain the victims may also experience sweating, nausea or shortness of breath. Many victims deny that they may be having a heart attack. Others worsen their condition by fear of dying. It is important for the rescuer to constantly reassure the victims of heart attacks and keep them as calm and relaxed as possible. The psychological value of reassurance is as important in first aid as any treatments.

First Aid for a Heart Attack:
1) One should be able to recognize the signs & symptoms of a heart attack
2) The rescuer should comfort & reassure the victim
3) Make the victim stop whatever they were doing and sit or lie in a comfortable position
4) Call for emergency medical help quickly
5) If the victim becomes unconscious, one should be prepared to perform CPR
All of us can reduce the risk of heart attack by controlling high blood pressure, limiting cholesterol in the diet, watching weight, exercising, giving up smoking and minimizing stress.

Treatment:

A laceration should be repaired in the following conditions. If laceration continues to bleed and the cut is more than one-eighth to one-fourth inch deep. If it exposes fat, muscle, tendon, or bone and causes a change in function surrounding the area of the laceration. Lacerations are less likely to become contaminated if they are repaired soon after they happen. Many doctors will not repair a laceration that is more than eight hours old because the threat of infection is too great. Laceration mends a tear in the skin or other tissue. The process is similar to repairing a tear in clothing. Primary care physicians, emergency room physicians, and surgeons usually mend lacerations. Goals of laceration repair are to stop bleeding, prevent infection, preserve function, and restore appearance. Before repairing the laceration, the doctor thoroughly examines the wound and the underlying tendons or nerves. If nerves or tendons have been hurt, a surgeon may be needed to complete the repair. The laceration is cleaned by taking out any foreign material or debris. Removing foreign objects from penetrating wounds can sometimes cause bleeding, so this type of wound must be cleaned very cautiously. The injury is then irrigated with saline solution and a disinfectant. Once it has been cleaned, the physician anesthetizes the area of the repair by injecting a local anesthetic. The physician may trim edges that are jagged or extremely uneven. Tissue that is too damaged to heal must be removed to prevent infection.

Conclusion:

The laceration is kept dry for at least 24 hours after the repair. Light bathing is generally allowed after 24 hours if it’s not soaked. The doctor will provide directions for any particular wound care. Stitches are removed 3-14 days after the repair is finished. Suture removal depends on the location of the laceration and physician preference.

First aid kits, to everyone’s knowledge are very important. They are the first clinic at hand. They should therefore be very organized and accessible. They should be available at anytime and well stocked, because time of crisis can come anytime. First said kits should be kept everywhere, at home, in schools and most importantly in cars. Accidents can happen anytime and anyplace; therefore one should be ready with all the precautions. However, having a first aid kit is not all that is required. One should know how to be able to use it as well. There very short course that helps one get introduced to the kit.

Contents:

First and foremost one should know what to find in the kit. In a basic first aid kit, following are the contents:

1) 1 or 2 crepe bandages
2) 1 or 2 elastic bandages
3) 1 pair scissors
4) A few safety pins for the crepe bandages to be properly attached
5) Towels and alcohol swabs for wiping the wound incase of unavailability of water.
6) A pair of gloves for not making the wounds worst.
7) A few unmedicated bandage strips for petty wounds. A small booklet and a few hand towels.

Other important contents:

Other very important contents in a first aid kits are different medicines. Medicines like painkillers and anti allergies should be kept. One must remember to keep the first aid kits away from the reach of children because of these medicines especially of there are medicines like aspirin. It may prove harmful for children below the age of 16.

Things you should know before using the first aid kits:

How to bandage: the person should be made to sit in the correct position first of all. If it is a wound then it should be properly cleaned. The injured part should be properly supported before you start bandaging. The banded should not be too tight or too loose. Too much tight will stop the blood circulation, and very loose will not stop the blood flow.

Reduce infection risk: before you start doing anything, your hands should be properly washed. The wound should be wiped with alcohol or water as soon as possible. This will reduce the risk of infection.

A few pointers before signing off are that the first aid kit should be kept at hand, at home, in office, in school and in the car. Before purchasing the kit the list of basic items should be kept in the mind.

Useful kits are easily portable and include only the minimum elements needed to stay alive, with no extraneous luxury additions to provide for comfort. The kit almost always includes materials for shelter against the elements, water potage and purification, implements for creating fire, light, and emergency signals, a knife and sharpening implement, navigation equipment, first aid supplies, and food.

Typical Emergency kits include:
Plastic bags
Iodine tablets
Matches in waterproof case
Candles
Swiss army knife
Bandages
Canned food

Pre-packaged Emergency kits can include instructions in survival techniques, including first aid methods. Most first aid kits contain bandages for controlling bleeding, personal protective equipment such as gloves and a barrier for performing rescue breathing and sometimes instructions on how to perform first aid.

Emergency first aid kit contains:

1.Altitude sickness, which can begin in susceptible people at altitudes as low as 5,000 feet, can cause potentially fatal swelling of the brain or lungs.
2. Bones fracture a break in a bone initially treated by stabilizing the fracture with a splint.
3. Burns, which can result in damage to tissues and loss of body fluids through the burn site.
4. Choking, blockage of the airway which can quickly result in death due to lack of oxygen if the patient’s trachea is not cleared.
5. Poisoning, this can occur by injection, inhalation, absorption, or ingestion.
6. Sprain, a temporary dislocation of a joint that immediately reduces automatically but may result in ligament damage.

Emergency action principle:

Perform a secondary survey only if you are sure that the victim has no life threatening (ABC) conditions.
Interview the victim.
1 Pain,
2 Medical conditions,
3 medications,
4 allergies,
5 when did you last eat or drink?
Head-to-toe examination (for a child, toe-to-head)
1 medical alert bracelets
2 compare one side against the other
3 pain, deformation

Emergecy preparedness:

Emergency management is the continuous process by which all individuals, all groups and all communities manage hazards and the effects of disaster. The process involves mitigation and preparedness (pre-event/event) and response and recovery (event/post-event). Actions taken depend in part on perceptions of risk and event-generated needs; effectiveness depends in part on how well activities are integrated. Activities at each level (individual, group, community) affect the other levels.

Blisters are fluid-filled bumps on the skin. Many unlike things may cause blisters.

What are they?

Blisters are fluid-filled bumps on the skin. Many unlike things may cause blisters. Some of the most important causes are burns, reactions to insect bites, chronic rubbing or trauma to the skin, and rashes from viral illnesses, such as chicken pox. Blisters are usually filled with sterile fluid although they can arise as a reaction from a skin infection. Common causes of blisters are friction and burns. If the blister isn’t too painful, do everything feasible to keep it intact. Unbroken skin over a blister provides a natural barrier to bacteria and reduces the risk of infection. Cover the blister with a small adhesive bandage to shield it.

Treatment to be done:

The symptoms are, most blisters cause no pain unless they crack, exposing tender skin underneath. The burning often associated with these skin lesions is usually not really from the blisters themselves, but from the irritated skin immediately surrounding the blister. Things that should be done at home is one should not break open the blister. This can lead to a skin infection. Once the blister opens on its own, antibiotic ointment should be applied on it until it is healed. If it is practical, try to save the blister from harm with an adhesive bandage. Immediate attention of the blisters should be taken if the blisters are formed because of a burn or chemical exposure, if the blisters are within the mouth, if there is significant pain or redness associated with the blister, or if the blister is oozing pus. If the blister is giving a lot of pain, drain the fluid while leaving the overlying skin intact. It should be drained by the help of the following process. Wash your hands and the blister with lukewarm water and soap. Clean the blister with rubbing alcohol. Disinfect a clean, sharp needle by wiping it with rubbing alcohol. With the help of the needle puncture the blister. Aim for numerous spots near the blister’s edge. Let the fluid drain, but leave the overlying skin in position. Apply an antibiotic ointment on the blister and cover with a bandage. Use tweezers and scissors sterilized with rubbing alcohol to cut away all the dead skin after some days. Apply more ointment on to it.

Conclusion:

Call your doctor if you see signs of infection around a blister either pus, redness, increasing pain or warm skin. To prevent a blister, use gloves, socks, a bandage or similar protective covering over the region being rubbed. You might also try attaching moleskin inside of your shoes where it might rub, such as your heels.
