The term heart disease is rather general, a sort of umbrella term which covers a number of different diseases that affect the heart, including coronary artery disease, pulmonary heart disease, congestive heart failure and angina. There are many different facts about heart disease that are important to know, regardless of whether or not you yourself have developed a heart disease.

Facts About Heart Disease

One of the most important facts about heart disease involves the alarming statistics of heart disease in this country. For instance: 50 million suffer from high blood pressure, 12 million suffer from coronary heart disease, 6.2 million suffer from angina pectoris, 7 million suffer from heart attacks, 4.4 million suffer from strokes, 1.8 million suffer from rheumatic heart disease/fever, and 1 million suffer from congenital cardiovascular defects.

As well, of the 50 Americans who have high blood pressure 35 percent do not even know they have it, about every 29 seconds an American will suffer from a coronary event, at least 250,000 people each year die of heart attacks before they reach the hospital, half of all heart attack victims wait more than two hours before getting help, and cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer of both men and women.

Another of the most important facts about heart disease involves the actual causes of heart disease. The most major cause is a thickening of the inside walls of the coronary arteries, and this thickening narrows the space through which blood can flow, thus decreasing and sometimes even completely blocking the supply of oxygen to the heart.

High blood pressure and high cholesterol are also considered as being major causes of heart disease, and on average, each of these actually doubles your chances of developing heart disease at some point in your lifetime. Obesity and inactivity are two other factors which are likely to cause heart disease, and being overweight especially increases the likelihood of you developing some type of heart disease.

Learning about the facts of heart disease is incredibly important, even if you have not yet developed heart disease because then you will be more informed and knowledgeable and you will be able to best protect yourself against getting heart disease in the future. Although there is no surefire way of preventing yourself from developing heart disease, by maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle you can guard yourself against it and other heart and health conditions, and thus you will be benefiting yourself in more ways than one.

Heart disease and stroke are both incredibly serious ailments, and are both alarmingly common afflictions worldwide. Although there is no surefire way to protect yourself against heart disease and stroke, there are certain things that you can do to try to prevent it, which will be discussed here.

Risk Factors for Heart Disease and Stroke

Increasing age is one of the biggest risk factors, and this is obviously impossible to avoid, as we all get older whether we like it or not. People, especially women, as they get older, their risk of heart disease and stroke begins to rise and continues to rise with age. Gender also plays a role as a major risk factor, as men have a much greater risk of heart attack than women do.

Family history also plays a role here, as both men and women are more likely to develop heart disease and stroke if it runs in their family. Race is also a factor because black women are at much greater risk than white women, and compared with whites, African-American women and men are both much more likely to die of stroke than Caucasian women and men.

Modifiable Risk Factors

Although some risk factors, such as family history and age cannot be modified or reversed, there are certain risk factors that can be. Cigarette smoking, for instance, is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, however smoking is preventable. If you do not smoke, then you should certainly not start, and if you do, you should find treatment and quit as soon as you possibly can.

High blood cholesterol is another of the most major risk factors for heart disease and for stroke that can be treated or controlled, and the best way to do this is to ensure that you are living a healthy lifestyle, including eating a nutritious diet and getting plenty of regular exercise.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attack and is actually the most important risk factor for stroke. The best way to lower your blood pressure is to reduce or even completely eliminate sodium from your diet, and as well you want to stop drinking alcohol, if this applies to you, because in most people alcohol causes blood pressure to rise quite a lot.

By taking all of the previously mentioned facts into consideration and following through with them, you will be able to greatly protect yourself against both heart disease and stroke, as well as various other heart and health conditions.

Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States as well as in other parts of the world, and it is also a major cause of disability. There are many different forms of heart disease, with the most common cause being a narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that work to supply blood to the heart itself.

If you have heart disease then you will have to have some form of heart disease treatment in order to deal with your problem, and there are a variety of heart disease treatment options that are available.

Heart Disease Treatment Options

There are some milder and simpler forms of heart disease treatment, many of which can also be a form of prevention, if done before you actually have heart disease. Smoking is a big issue here, and so if you smoke, then quit. This is one of the single best lifestyle changes that you can ever possibly make, as after three years of not smoking, the risk of heart disease drops to the level of a nonsmoker.

You also want to lower the cholesterol level in your blood and lowering your cholesterol will work by keeping the plaques from building up in the coronary arteries. Your total cholesterol level should be kept to below 200mg/dL, and your LDL cholesterol level below 130mg/dL.

If you have a problem with blood pressure or diabetes, then you need to make sure that you keep it properly under control, as uncontrolled blood pressure and diabetes are both considered as being major causes of heart disease.

If your heart disease is more serious than most likely you will also have to use more serious methods of heart disease treatment. This includes medical treatment, which will usually be started immediately, even before a definite diagnosis of a heart problem is made.

This medical treatment may include oxygen through a tube in the nose, oxygen through a face mask, nitroglycerin under the tongue, pain medicines, and aspirin. There are also clot dissolving medicines which are often given, and the earlier these drugs are given, the better the chances of opening the blocked artery and of protecting the cardiac muscle from further injury.

You should never start any type of treatment for heart disease without speaking to your doctor first, unless it is something that is obviously safe for you to do, such as quitting smoking and drinking.

Anyone interested in knowing about what is heart disease will first need to understand the definition of the problem. Basically, a heart disease is something that is a disorder affecting the ability of the heart in functioning in a normal manner. There are many common causes of a person suffering heart diseases such as when arteries get blocked or become narrow thus limiting the supply of blood to the heart.

Many Reasons

Heart diseases may also occur due to congenital reasons and also because of hypertension, heart valve malfunction and electrical rhythm of the heart going out of sync. What is heart disease is a question that many people require an answer to, as it is a major force in killing people and its various forms include alcoholic cardiomyopathy, aortic regurgitation, heart attacks and heart failure and many more such manifestations.

In fact, the number of heart diseases is many, and when touching on the topic of what is heart disease one will have quite a long list to study. Such is the prevalence of heart disease in America, that it is believed that as many as a quarter of all Americans have some form of heart disease or the other.

What is heart disease can also be understood by learning what occurs in the initial stages of the problem. It is often noticed that there will be seen forming lesions and cracks in the walls of blood vessel walls, especially where there is highest pressure and even stress which is usually close to the heart itself. After this, the body tries to repair the damage and there will be some fatty substances such as cholesterol and lipoproteins being deposited within blood vessels in order to fill the cracks.

If, with the passage of time, the body does not get adequate nutrient, vitamin C that are vital for keeping the blood vessel walls from cracking, the fatty substances can result in clogging the blood vessels and thus cause a stroke, and even result in heart attack.

One can also understand what is heart disease by understanding the symptoms that will vary according to the type of heart disease. It is unfortunate that in certain instances, these symptoms may fail to appear in the early stages thus making it difficult to understand what form of heart disease is affecting a patient.

One should also understand that heart disease is preventable by taking regular exercise, having low salt and low fat diets as well as abstaining from alcohol and smoking. One point that needs to be mentioned is that when one wants to know about what is heart disease, it is important to realize that this is a disease that affects women more than men. In fact, if a woman is given to snoring regularly, she may be about thirty-three percent more likely to suffer heart attacks or even strokes. And, about a fifth of all women have cardiovascular diseases in one form or the other.

One should also realize that winter is a time of year when heart disease is most likely to occur in America, and thus one should take care by knowing beforehand what is heart disease, must be well prepared in being able to ward it off.

The facts relating to heart disease in women are indeed quite frightening, and not at all reassuring for women who, it is believed are eight million strong as far as living with heart disease is concerned. The fact is that today heart disease in women is the leading cause for their deaths, which leads to the conclusion that for women to live longer, they need to prevent the onset and development of heart diseases by using whatever means are available.

Recognition Of The Problem Often Occurs Too Late

No doubt that doctors today, thanks to better and improved technologies, is able to diagnose as well as treat heart disease in women much better than in the past. However, most often women that realize that they have such a condition may already is in an advanced stage of the heart disease condition, and thus little can be done to help them. Often, the matter only comes to light after the woman has been struck down by a stroke or has had a heart attack. One of the contributing factors to heart disease in women is the fact that she may have been engaged in risk factors such as cigarette smoking, elevated cholesterol as well as blood pressure, and also being relatively inactive and suffering from diabetes, or even being obese.

A woman that denies these risk factors will have a better chance of survival as well as not being struck down by the many potential heart diseases. It may mean making the necessary changes to their lifestyles and heart disease in women does not necessarily have to become inevitable, if proper care is exercised.

Heart disease in women can also come about due to the woman’s age, effect of menopause, and heredity and a few other factors. Thus, women need to become more knowledgeable about the risk factors that cause heart diseases, and use this knowledge in combating and avoiding falling into the habits that promote heart diseases in them.

Using her understanding of the facts that leads to heart disease in women, and also taking preventive measures will greatly reduce the high rate of mortality suffered by women as a consequence of heart diseases, and if she uses the right techniques, such a problem can be greatly reduced in women.

She can, for instance, take vitamins as well as certain over-the-counter medications that help prevent heart disease in women including Sytrinol, Potassium and also M.S.M. A product such as Sytrinol has been found effective in keeping the cholesterol levels at low normal, and this is achieved by reduction in triglycerides as well as low low-density lipoprotein levels. And, using M.S.M., women can develop protein in their bodies and keep the connective tissues strong. For more information regarding heart disease in women and the possible treatment and preventive methods, women should consult their doctors or professional healthcare professionals that can recommend proper means that will help them prolong their lives.

Heart disease is not actually a single disease, but rather it is a complex of diseases of varied etiology. There are a number of different causes of heart disease, including for instance damage to the heart muscle or valves due to a congenital defect, as well as inflammation and damage associated with various viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic diseases.

Rheumatic fever and syphilis are other ailments that are also considered as contributors to or causes of heart disease, as can genetic or autoimmune disorders in which cellular proteins in the heart muscle are deranged or which disrupt enzymes affecting cardiac function.

More About the Causes of Heart Disease

There are also a variety of other causes of heart disease, including: atherosclerosis, dermatomyositis, diabetes, Friedrich’s ataxia, hemochromatosis, high cholesterol, hypertension, Kawasaki disease, menopause, Paget’s disease of bone, physical inactivity, smoking, type 1 and 2 diabetes, and being underweight or overweight.

It is important to understand that the factors that are considered as being able to initiate a heart attack are really twofold, with one being the pathological buildup of abnormal plaque, in the arteries, plaque that gradually hardens through calcification. However this abnormal plaque should not be confused with the fatty streaks and thickening that is found in the arteries of both primitive and industrialized peoples throughout the world.

After all without this natural thickening the arteries would end up weakening in those areas as the body aged, and this would result in leading to aneurysms and ruptures. The other half involves the blood clot or thrombus that blocks blood flow to the heart or the brain. Inflammation is also able to cause blockages, and in fact, an entirely new view of coronary artery disease is that it is an inflammatory process which is characterized particularly by cycles of irritation, injury, healing and reinjury inside of the blood vessels.

It is very important and beneficial to understand the causes of heart disease because then you can try to prevent it as much as possible. Although heart disease is basically unavoidable, there are certain things that you can do to protect yourself against it as much as possible, namely eating a healthy and nutritious diet and making sure that you get plenty of physical activity.

By keeping yourself healthy, you will not only protect yourself against heart disease but from other ailments and health conditions as well, and so it is beneficial in many more ways than one.

While there are those individuals who are in denial in regards to the connection between coronary heart disease and smoking. Often, this denial is based upon self-denial and the need to defuse any criticism deflected towards smoking; or the denial comes from those who profit from the sale of cigarettes. Granted, smoking remains legal and a personal choice, but it is also a dangerous practice and individuals must understand that a smoking habit can contribute to serious coronary heart disease over time.

Pop Cultural Influences That Contribute to Coronary Heart Disease

If you are a fan of classic television programs or old motion pictures, there is something that is so overwhelming that it can not be ignored and that is the shocking number (by today’s standards) of people who are smoking.

If you look at old episodes of Johnny Carson’s TONIGHT SHOW, he casually puffs on a cigarette throughout the bulk of the program; classic films of the 1930′s and 1940′s are filled with actors puffing away through the duration of the program; and, most bizarre in retrospective, there is a scene in 1973′s THE EXORCIST where the DOCTORS are smoking in the examination scene.

Yes, at one time, smoking was so commonplace and present in the world that it garnered a foothold in pop culture. The reason this was so prevalent was because close to 50% (!) of the public was heavily addicted to tobacco. Sadly, this addiction was not without consequence as significant volumes of lung cancer and coronary heart disease increased to coincide with the massive spike in individuals who enjoyed their cigarettes.

How Smoking Contributes to Coronary Heart Disease

Smoking causes a number of ravaging effects on the human body including respiratory problems, the stunting of growth, etc. When it comes to the effects on the human heart, constant inhalation of smoke over an extended period of years, probably the most significant effect that smoke has is the fact that it constricts the arteries. When this occurs, the blood flow through the arteries becomes limited. Needless to say, this is a dangerous situation as a potential heart attack is a significant possibility.

Keep in mind the ravages of smoking on the human heart are not immediate. Unlike, say, a cocaine overdose where a massive influx of stimulation overloads the heart at one time, the effects of smoking are gradual. Because of this, even an individual who has been smoking for an extended number of years may be able to avoid a life threatening situation provided they quit smoking before a devastating condition takes hold.

Needless to say, any smoker who has fears of suffering coronary heart disease should toss the pack of cigs out the window as soon as possible. It would be the wisest health decisions a person could make.

Anybody who has a history of heart disease in the family needs to be fully aware of the increased risk of developing the condition themselves. Even having one grandparent who had heart disease can constitute as a family history so it is in everyone’s best interest to research into their own family’s problems. By fully investigating the heart disease history in the family, a person can easily go to their doctor armed with this information in order to be assessed or else aim to lower their chances of history repeating itself by improving their health and diet.

The chances of heart disease being part of a family’s history are not exactly known but the reasons normally given for this type of problem is that there is either a defect or a habit that has been inherited. Many illnesses are hereditary but so are lifestyle choices as people pass their behavior on by example. A person whose parent’s developed heart disease because of a sedentary lifestyle combined with poor eating habits are more than likely bound to repeat these mistakes if they do not have enough knowledge on the subject.

Lowering the Risks of Heart Disease Even with a Family History

Although the risks of developing heart disease are significantly increased if there is a family history, there are ways to lower the overall risk of heart disease. A family history of heart disease is unavoidable and as many people around the world are not in close contact with all of their family members, they may not even realize they are at risk. This means that everyone should be aware of the risks of heart disease and do their best to prevent it occurring for any reason.

The best ways to lower the risks of any form of heart disease even with a family history is to protect and promote a healthy lifestyle. Obesity is a big problem as is diet, exercise, stress, high blood pressure, cholesterol, nicotine and alcohol. Cigarette smoking should be avoided as well as excessive alcohol consumption. A healthy weight should be maintained and a regular exercise regime preferably maintained.

Physical inactivity combined with other factors significantly increases the chances of heart disease occurring. High blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol all negatively contribute to the risks of heart disease. Stress is also a major factor and people are advised to learn when to relax as well as pay attention to all the other factors when preparing to protect the body from this type of disease.

The issue of sleep apnea and heart disease is one which is very important to take into consideration, especially considering the significant rise in both ailments which has taken place over the past few years. The connection between sleep apnea and heart disease is one which has truly only been recognized over the past decade or so, but is now actually considered as being one of the most monumental findings in health science of the century.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs when a person actually stops breathing at points during their sleep, and it is a common disorder which can be incredibly serious.

The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, and during sleep what happens is that not enough air flow can get to your lungs through your mouth and nose even though you try to breathe, and when that happens the amount of oxygen in your blood may drop, and normal breaths then start again, typically with a loud snort or choking sound.

The Connection Between Sleep Apnea and Heart Disease

The connection between sleep apnea and heart disease is that sleep apnea is now considered as being one of the most major underlying causes of heart disease. It is believed that there is a strong association between obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension, heart failure, stroke and ischemic heart disease. As well, recent research has shown that obstructive sleep apnea patients who have normal blood pressure run a risk of developing high blood pressure within four years.

Sleep apnea patients have been found to have much higher levels of sympathetic nervous system activity during both wake and sleep than a matched set of control patients without obstructive sleep apnea. These sleep apnea patients are also known to have much faster heart rates than non-apnea patients, but at the same time they tend to have less variability in their heart rates overall.

Basically how this works is that as sleep apnea patients stop breathing during their sleep, their oxygen levels end up decreasing and their carbon dioxide levels correspondingly increase. This results in activating the sympathetic nervous system, and so when the apnea patient breathes in, their cardiac output increases while their blood pressure spikes greatly. This is seriously problematic because it results in disrupting the normal nighttime regulation of blood pressure and the sympathetic nervous system.

The issue of sleep apnea and heart disease is being extensively worked on, in order to come to better and more detailed results, and this is really the only way that any positive solutions will be able to come out of this. There are so many causes of heart disease as it is, and so reducing this number is the best way to attack the problem of heart disease in general.

When it comes to diabetes and heart disease, there are a variety of different things that you need to consider. The first of these things that you need to consider is the diabetes factor. Some people think that they need to have been born with diabetes for it to be a factor, but actually, a person can get type two diabetes as well.

Type two diabetes usually occurs when a person is very much overweight, especially because of their diet. Too many people have a penchant for junk food, and junk food has a large amount of sugar in it. Eating too much sugar not only results in significant weight gain, it also heightens the level of sugar in the blood, which results in type two diabetes.

Heart disease is caused by two main things: being significantly overweight, or genetics. If you are wondering if diabetes and heart disease can be genetic within your family, find out the health situation that your parents and grandparents have. Heart disease, specifically high cholesterol, is something that is prevalent genetically in many families.

Many people wonder what heart disease is specifically, especially if they have no prior evidence of it within their family. Well, there are many different things that comprise heart disease, but there is a direct correlation between diabetes and heart disease, especially if you have developed type two diabetes.

For people that have type two diabetes because of years of eating junk food, heart disease is the next thing that usually happens. You see, heart disease is usually caused by high cholesterol, and high cholesterol is caused by eating fatty food. The fat from this food is absorbed into the blood stream, and over time the fatty deposits build up in the arteries. Some people end up with arteries that are so clogged that they require bypass surgery.

So, how can you avoid getting diabetes and heart disease? First of all, the thing that you need to do is make sure you eat the right foods – foods that are low in sugar and cholesterol. Also, be sure that you stay active, even if it is just taking a walk. Really, it is all about moderation, so if you decide to eat healthy now, you can have a healthier future.

Heart disease is an incredibly important and serious issue, and it is very surprising just how many people do not realize that children can also suffer from heart disease. Child heart disease is actually quite a common ailment across the world, and congenital heart disease is actually one of the most common birth defects of all, affecting nearly one percent of all babies born.

Many of these infants are first diagnosed with child heart disease when their pediatrician hears a heart murmur on a routine examination.

Information on Child Heart Disease

For the most part how child heart disease works is that their heart can have a small abnormality that may or may not be noticeable at birth, and generally if there is a hole in the heart wall that lets blood travel from one side to the other then the baby will have blue lips or fingers.

There are also other problems which may be involved here, such as an abnormal heart valve, and this may result in allowing blood to flow the wrong way, and this is a problem which will usually require surgery once the child is older. While most are, some heart problems in children are not congenital, and so it is something that can never really be expected.

What a Heart Murmur is

A heart murmur is a noise that the blood makes as it flows through the heart, and it is sort of like the noise that water makes when it flows through a hose. Heart murmurs are common in children, some which are harmless, and others which are not.

Because a heart murmur is one of the most common signs of child heart disease, most parents get frantic at the term. However a lot of the time heart murmurs actually do not mean that there is anything wrong with your child, and these heart murmurs are known as being ‘innocent’ or ‘functional’.

For the times that a heart murmur does actually indicate a problem with your child’s heart, this is when there is a hole in the heart, a leak in the heart valve, or a narrow heart valve. If your doctor suspects that there is a problem, then the first thing they will do is refer you to a pediatric cardiologist, which is a doctor who specializes in child heart disease. The cardiologist will do an examination and do tests in order to find out whether there is actually a problem or not.

Before one can seek effective treatment for a heart condition, one needs to realize that a heart condition exists. While this would seem like an academic point, the truth of the matter is that many people are completely unaware that they may have heart disease.

As shocking as it may sound, there have been instances of doctors discovering scar tissue from PREVIOUS heart attacks that occurred many years prior to physical examination to deal with current heart disorders. This, of course, brings about the very serious question as to how one could suffer from a serious heart problem and not realize that he or she has a serious condition. The answer to this is that people are not aware of the symptoms heart disease embody and this leads to the condition getting worse and worse.

Part of the reason for this is that most people either confuse symptoms heart disease embody with other minor problems or they do not believe what they are feeling is an actual problem. This is an incredibly unfortunate problem because the symptoms heart disease embody are a precursor to an incredibly serious condition that could be life threatening. In order to avoid such a potential calamity, it is important to clearly define and understand the symptoms heart disease embody.

The Most Common Symptoms Heart Disease Entails

The most common symptoms of heart disease include a heaviness or pressure on the chest; dizziness; nausea; shortness of breath; back or shoulder pain; irregular or fast heartbeats; and excessive heart palpitations. If a person experiences any of these problems, then it would be well advised to visit a doctor as soon as possible to as to ascertain whether or not a serious heart condition is present.

In such a condition is discovered to exist, then it would require immediate attention. Hence, if one is experiencing any of these symptoms, it would be foolish to not get a check up to see if the condition has reached a level of severity that may not be treatable.

Avoiding Panic Regarding Symptoms of Heart Disease

Keep in mind, many of these symptoms can also be indicative of a benign condition or, possibly, purely psychosomatic ills. Unfortunately, many people make these diagnoses on their own and without a doctor’s consultation. This is a reckless decision and should be avoided. One should always seek qualified medical opinions on any potentially damaging condition. This is a serious issue and should be treated as such.

The term hereditary heart disease refers to heart disease which is passed down through the family, and this is considered as being a congenital type of heart disease because it is basically unavoidable and unpreventable. If you have a history of early heart disease in your family then you too are at risk for hereditary heart disease.

The most first-degree relatives that you have who have suffered from heart disease, such as your mother, father, brother, sister and so on, especially those who developed it at a younger age, the greater your risk of developing it as well.

Although hereditary heart disease can be caused by a variety of factors, some of them are actually avoidable. For instance if heart disease is clustering in your family, then it may just be due to the way that your family lives, including unhealthy habits such as poor diet, little or no exercise, and smoking. All of these factors can contribute to heart disease and can start the chain of hereditary heart disease.

Stopping the Cycle

Although there is no surefire way to stop the cycle of hereditary heart disease, there are certain things that you can do to try. The main thing is to make sure that the people in your family live as healthy a lifestyle as possible. This means eating a nutritious and well-balanced diet, getting plenty of physical activity, and staying away from bad habits such as smoking and excessive drinking.

Heart disease may be caused by various different factors, but although you cannot choose your genes, you can however choose the way you live. By following a healthy lifestyle and taking any medication that is required, it is very possible to lower your risk of developing heart disease, even if your genes predispose you to it.

Familial Hypercholesterolaemia

There are some particularly extreme cases of high cholesterol which run in families, such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, and this is a genetic problem which results in exceptionally high total cholesterol levels. Whenever this particular ailment is diagnosed, it is crucial that all close relatives to the person diagnosed have their cholesterol levels checked as well, so that they can be treated if necessary.

Although there is no way to positively prevent yourself from developing heart disease, you can do things to protect yourself against it as much as possible, and by maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle you will not only be guarding yourself against heart disease but as well against various other heart and health conditions.

Although there is not necessarily a way to rid your body of heart disease, there are some methods that you can use in order to attempt to reverse it. Reversing heart disease is certainly not an easy task, however if you are determined and motivated then it can be done. There are many different kinds of heart disease however, and only sometimes the damage that has already been caused to the heart can be reversed.

Methods of Reversing Heart Disease

The most common type of heart disease of all is blockage of the coronary arteries, and it is these blood vessels which provide nourishment to the heart muscle, and so if they are blocked then as a result the heart muscle may be injured or even die. When the heart muscle dies, this is known as a heart attack.

However even if the scars that are caused by this cannot be changed, the blockage of the coronary arteries can be changed, and people who have had a heart attack can do certain things and make certain changes to their lifestyle in order to attempt at reversing heart disease.

This includes lowering cholesterol and fats in their diet, exercising, smoking and alcohol drinking cessation, and if necessary taking the proper medication in order to lower the cholesterol levels in the blood.

There are also other treatments for reversing heart disease that you can use, such as having surgery in order to bypass blockages and opening of blockages. Angioplasty and bypass surgery procedures have some truly significant adverse outcomes, including heart attack, stroke and even death, and so although they can often be helpful in reversing heart disease, at the same time you have to consider the negative outcomes that can be the result of them.

There are various resources that are available if you are interested in gaining even more information on the reversal of heart disease, and the most important thing of all is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, namely including a healthy and nutritious diet and plenty of exercise.

There are certain foods that you should ensure are included in your diet as well as those which you should steer clear of, and so doing a bit of research into what the proper foods are to include in your diet is a good idea.

By maintaining a healthy lifestyle you will not only be protecting yourself against heart disease but as well against all ailments and health conditions in general. It is thus incredibly beneficial and advantageous to you to make sure that you life the healthiest lifestyle that you possibly can.

Heart disease is a number of abnormal conditions affecting the heart and the blood vessels in the heart, and coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease of all, and is also the leading cause of heart attacks.

Coronary heart disease is a term that refers to damage to the heart that occurs because its blood supply is reduced, and what happens here is that fatty deposits build up on the linings of the blood vessels that supply the heart muscles with blood, resulting in them narrowing. This narrowing reduces the blood supply to the heart muscles and causes pain that is known as angina.

Causes of Coronary Heart Disease

There are a few factors in particular which are considered as being responsible causes of coronary heart disease, one in particular being high cholesterol, and throughout the world cholesterol levels vary widely. Generally people who live in countries where blood cholesterol levels are lower, such as Japan for instance, have lower rates of heart disease, and yet at the same time some populations with similar cholesterol levels have very different heart disease rates.

Another one of the major causes of coronary heart disease is cigarette and tobacco smoke, as a smoker’s risk of developing heart disease is twice that of a nonsmoker, and studies have actually shown that after five years of giving up smoking, the risk of developing heart disease is the same as that of someone who had never smoked in their life.

Diagnosis of Coronary Heart Disease

Really the only positive way that this heart disease can be diagnosed is through the use of coronary angiography, and this is a procedure that uses a special dye and x-rays in order to see how well blood is flowing through your heart. It is usually done in conjunction with cardiac catherization, and before the procedure starts you will typically be given a sedative to help you relax.

Prevention

However the best thing that you can do is prevent heart disease to begin with and there are many things that you can do in order to guard yourself against heart disease as much as possible. The most important is to ensure that you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This means eating a healthy and nutritious diet and making sure that you get a decent amount of physical activity on a regular basis.

By keeping yourself as healthy overall as possible, you will not only be protecting yourself from heart disease but as well from various other heart and health conditions.

Although there are really no surefire ways to diagnose heart disease besides going in to see your doctor and having a proper examination, there are certain signs of heart disease that may be giving you a warning of such problems. It is therefore incredibly important to watch out for these signs of heart disease, so that if you do happen to notice them you can get in to see your doctor as soon as possible and get treatment, if necessary.

Signs of Heart Disease

Each different type of heart disease has its own signs and symptoms, however there are some basic signs of heart disease that are typical with all the various different types of heart disease, one in particular being angina.

Angina is best described as being a discomfort, heaviness, pressure, burning or squeezing feeling in the chest, and is often mistaken for indigestion or heartburn. Agina is chest pain that occurs when your heart muscle is not getting enough blood, and besides in your chest the pain caused by it may also occur in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw and back.

Shortness of breath is another commonly experienced sign of heart disease, and it occurs when blood backs up in the pulmonary veins, which are the vessels that return the blood from the lungs to the heart, and as a result this causes fluid to leak into the lungs. This symptom is most commonly experienced during activity, or while sleeping, and if you experience it you will most often have difficulty breathing while lying flat and may have to prop up your upper body.

Edema, which is a build up of excess fluid in the body tissues, is another of the most common signs of heart disease, and this occurs when blood flow out of the heart slows, the blood that is returning to the heart through the veins becomes backed up, causing fluid to build up in the tissues.

Tiredness and fatigue are also common, and this happens when the body is not able to pump enough blood to be able to meet the needs of body tissues. The body then diverts blood away from what are considered as being the less vital organs, and in particular this is referring to the muscles in the limbs, and sends it to the heart and brain.

If at any time you notice any of these signs or symptoms of heart disease, you need to make an appointment to see your doctor for as soon as you possibly can, so that you can go in for a full examination and have a proper assessment and diagnosis. After all, only after you have been properly diagnosed can you really get yourself on the road to treatment.

Regarding the subject of heart disease, there is a common misconception that heart disease is something that a person brings upon himself whether by accident or design. In other words, an improper diet, excessive smoking, drug problems etc contribute to the eventually breakdown of the proper functioning of the heart.

However, there is a fallacy of thinking that many people perform when they believe that all heart disease is brought about by external factors or that it takes an extensive period of time for heart disease to develop. This is, of course, not true as one of the most common types of coronary disease includes congenital heart disease.

A Basic Intro To Congenital Heart Disease

For the unfamiliar, congenital heart disease refers to heart defects that are present at birth. As such, the serious heart problems that derive from congenital heart disease must be treated as soon as possible or else serious consequences can occur. Unfortunately, not all of these heart defects are discovered at birth and treatment occurs much later in life. Sadly, in certain cases, the treatment required is much more difficult to endure as it is initiated during a period when the damage caused by the defect has expanded over time.

Dealing with Congenital Heart Defects in Newborn Infants

Believe it or not, certain forms of congenital heart disease are self treating. That is to say, the defects that are present (such as a hole in the valves themselves) can actually heal on their own. While this might seem incredulous, it is, in fact, true. This is not to say, however, that the condition is not serious and that it will take care of itself. In many situations, major surgery will be required to alter the problems and defects that are present.

When it is discovered that a newborn infant has congenital heart disease, to say that it will cause parents great concern would be a tremendous understatement. The condition is life threatening, but it is not untreatable. In fact, unless the damage to the heart is too significant and extreme, then it can be effectively treated through surgery.

Of course, the surgery itself is complicated and has a number of risks associated with it, but the chances for correcting the problems (usually located within the valves) without the conditioning worsening are great. So, while it is not a situation that should be approached without any worry, it is not one that is hopeless.

It is hardly a good thing that a person develops a serious disorder or condition. A serious medical condition is bad on its own, but when one condition leads to another and two conditions compound one another making the situation even worse is a serious grave situation to be in. Such is the case with rheumatic heart disease as it is a serious heart condition that derives from rheumatic fever, a debilitating condition that has serious effects and repercussions associated with it by itself.

Looking at Rheumatic Heart Disease

The compounding of two or more conditions on top of each other makes treatment quit difficult. It also makes the recuperation time difficult and lengthier. As such, the seriousness of developing rheumatic heart disease can be a complicated and difficult situation to contend. Keep note, just because the situation is difficult does not mean that the situation is dire. There are a number of ways in which rheumatic heart disease can be treated and reduced from life threatening levels provided certain steps are taken in order to properly treat the condition. Before understanding how to treat the condition, however, one needs to understand the symptoms and complexities that define the particular condition.

Strep Throat and Rheumatic Heart Disease

Rheumatic heart disease often derives from strep throat infections. This can be a cause for alarm for many because strep throat, while often avoidable, is a fairly common condition that afflicts many people who do not treat a minor sore throat infection in time. However, there is no reason to panic if one does contract strep throat as the form of rheumatic heart disease that comes from strep throat are fairly rare. In fact, the sheer volume of cases of rheumatic heart disease has decreased drastically since the 1960′s. So, it is clear that the possibility of contracting rheumatic heart disease is rare, although not impossible.

Rheumatic Heart Disease and Heart Failure

If rheumatic fever is contracted and leads to rheumatic heart disease, the condition can be treated in a manner that is much easier than the common treatments for other forms of heart disease. This treatment would include taking cortisteroid anti-inflammatory medication to reverse any potential cardiac problems the fever might induce. This does not rule out the possibility for the requirement for more involved treatment such as surgery, but it does represent the potential for a simple, yet effective treatment. Hopefully, an individual who contracts such a condition can avoid the more complicated treatment.

Heart disease is an incredibly serious issue, and it refers to any of a number of diseases that are related to the heart and blood vessels. It takes many forms, and usually when it occurs it is due to inadequate blood flow to the hear muscle. This occurs when the arteries that supply the heart muscle become partially or even completely blocked.

Heart disease research is crucial when it comes to learning about what heart disease is and the causes of it, as well as solutions that can be used to help treat and even prevent heart disease. There are a number of fantastic companies and organizations out there that conduct heart disease research, of which will be discussed here.

Heart Disease Research Organizations

One heart disease research organization in particular is The Research Center for Stroke and Heart Disease, which is an organization that is non-profit, and which was established in order to raise awareness of and prevent stroke and heart disease across the world. It designs, implements and evaluates various projects in order to educate individuals and as well motivate them to adopt certain practices which have been shown to reduce risk factors.

They operate out of Buffalo General Hospital, and they employ several full-time and part-time staff and contractors who have backgrounds in such areas as health care management, communications and computer programming, for instance. Over the past ten years while being in business the Research Center for Stroke and Heart Disease has built an incredibly strong and respected reputation worldwide.

Another of the best heart disease research organizations is the British Heart Foundation, which is an organization that is considered as being the nation’s heart charity, and which focuses on three vital things in particular: investing in pioneering research, supporting and caring for heart patients, and providing vital information to help people reduce their own risk of dying prematurely from a heart or circulatory related illness.

Harvard Medical School is another center that focuses a large part of their attention on heart disease research, and they have in fact been doing this for several decades now. They offer a vast amount of information on heart disease, including about what it is, what causes it, new research findings and statistics, and so on.

This research on heart disease is really the only thing that is going to be able to help the serious situation involving heart disease in the world today, and hopefully sometime in the near future this research will lead to findings on how heart disease can be completely avoided altogether.

High cholesterol can be incredibly dangerous, and in particular it can cause atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries, which in turn can lead to blocked coronary arteries, manifested by chest pain, or a heart attack. Other serious problems such as blocked arteries to the brain, for instance, can result in a stroke, while blocked arteries in the legs can cause pain, limping and even disability.

The connection between cholesterol and heart disease is especially significant, and in order to be able to understand this connection better, there are a few other things that need to be understood first.

What Cholesterol is

Cholesterol is a fatty and wax-like substance that is naturally present in the human body, and your body uses this cholesterol in order to produce many different hormones, such as Vitamin D and the bile acids that help to digest fat. Although a certain amount of cholesterol is natural, if you have too much in your bloodstream then the excess may be deposited in the arteries of the heart, which in turn can lead to heart disease.

How to Prevent a Cholesterol and Heart Disease Problem

There are a few different things that you can do in order to prevent a cholesterol and heart disease problem. The best thing that you can do in order to prevent yourself from having a cholesterol and heart disease problem is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. This means making sure that you eat a healthy and nutritious diet, and that you include a proper amount of physical activity in your life on a regular basis.

As well to avoid cholesterol and heart disease problems, you need to rid any unhealthy habits from your life, such as smoking or excessive drinking, for instance. There are also various medications that you can take in order to lower your cholesterol, with the main goal of a treatment program being to lower your LDL cholesterol level.

If following a healthy diet, exercising, and losing weight does not work to lower your cholesterol, then this is when medication would best be used. However even if your doctor does prescribe a medication, you still have to follow your healthy diet, be more physically active, stop cigarette smoking if you smoke and as well control your other various risk factors, such as high blood pressure and diabetes for instance.

There are some risk factors which you are simply unable to control, such as your age and your family history, but by doing everything that you can, you will greatly reduce your risk of having high cholesterol and thus your risk of getting heart disease.
