Cirrhosis in brief:

Cirrhosis is considered to be the consequence of chronic liver disease characterized by replacement of liver tissue by fibrotic scar tissue as well as regenerative nodules leading to progressive loss of liver function. Mostly it occurs due to alcoholism and hepatitis C and it has been found to be the leading cause of death in the United States in the year 2000. The damage caused to the liver by cirrhosis can not be cannot be reversed but treatment can stop or delay further progression and reduce complications. The most prominent effects of the disease is associated with poor quality of life, increased risk of infections and a poor long term outcome including poor sexual performance, impotency and infertility in men. In advanced cases of cirrhosis it is observed that the condition is irreversible and the only option would be a liver transplant.

Cirrhosis affecting male fertility:

Cirrhosis is one of the most prominent factors that not only effects male fertility but also impairs it in some cases. Other than this in some men it is found that hormonal imbalance can also be the cause of infertility.Cirrhosis is found to be one of the prominent reasons that support the fact. It is also found that a large percentage of males with cirrhosis of the liver have testicular atrophy, impotence and gynecomastia because of which the testosterone levels are decreased. The estradiol within the body increases as a result of decreased hepatic extraction of androgens with increased conversion to estrogen peripherally.

Causes of cirrhosis:

Even though Cirrhosis has many causes, particularly in the United States and Europe, the most common causes are excessive alcohol use and chronic infection with the hepatitis C virus. Alcohol has a toxic effect on liver cells and may often result in alcoholic cirrhosis that tends to develop after a decade or more of heavy drinking. Women however are at greater risk of cirrhosis, even when they drink less alcohol than men. Another reason of the disease is chronic hepatitis C, which causes inflammation of the liver that eventually can lead to cirrhosis. On an average one out of every five people with chronic hepatitis C develops cirrhosis after 20 years.
