About cervical mucus:

Cervical mucus is a fluid secreted from the cervix and is produced by the hormone estrogen in the first phase known as the follicular phase of a monthly cycle. Fertile cervical is very much essential for fertilization as it helps in keeping the sperm alive for a few days. Also it protects the sperm from the acidity in the vagina along with assisting the sperm in swimming up to the fallopian tube so fertilization can take place. Naturally for women in their mid twenties have the cervical mucus for approximately 5 days and by mid-thirties the span reduces to only 1-2 days. The last on which an egg white consistency of the cervical mucus is observed is considered to be the day of peak fertility. During that period the cervical mucus appears as a thin and stretchy fluid where as after ovulation progesterone abruptly suppresses the peak mucus and the mucus pattern continues with sticky mucus for a day or two and then returns to dryness.

Improvement of the cervical mucus:

In many cases it is observed that cervical mucus is being retained or the cervix is in a very posterior position and it is suggested that those patients should consult their doctors during ovulation to have suitable guidance and treatment. It is also possible that ovulatory cycles may be the cause of poor cervical mucus in many women. In such cases, a temperature chart can help you insure that the cycle was ovulatory and if it was not then ovulation induction must be instituted to improve the quantity and quality of cervical mucus. Guaifenesin active ingredient in Robitussin cough syrup or its generic equivalent plays a very important role in the thinning process of the cervical fluid. Due to thick cervical mucus some women often fail to undergo the typical midcycle thinning and can form a barrier to sperm penetration. It has been found that smoking and caffeine has a negative impact on the production of cervical fluid. So it recommended cutting them off and also a daily intake of 6 glasses of water. Some common food items such as flax seed oil, raspberries and grape fruit juice are found to boost the quality and quantity of cervical fluid naturally within the body.
