Infertility is the term coined to express the inability of a couple to conceive a child due to the impairment of the body’s reproductive system. The actual conception of the child is dependent on a number of factors, which must be diagnosed and understood before remedial medical action is taken by way of reproductive medicine. Healthy sperm by the man and healthy eggs by the woman, unblocked fallopian tube, sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg, etc. are a few of the causes of infertility. Thus the problem of infertility can be due to the reproductive malfunctioning of either the man or the woman and in some cases both of them. Although some of the reasons for infertility are mentioned above, it is imperative to note that there is no particular reason for the onset of infertility. Hence it would be incorrect to hold anyone in particular liable for his or her infertility. The most common male infertility factors include azoospermia, wherein no sperm cells are produced at all, and oligospermia, wherein only a few sperm cells are produced which tend to be too few to be able to conceive a child. In women, the cause of infertility is most likely due to ovulation dysfunction. Also a blocked fallopian tube prevents the sperm from reaching the egg. Congenital anomalies, which involve the structure of the uterus and uterine fibroids, also contribute to the problem of infertility.
